Podcast: Perry Marshall Reveals How He Established Dominance In The Internet Marketing Industry

Perry MarshallPerry Marshall is the first true Internet marketing expert I ever came across. I can’t remember how I found Perry, but he was one of the very early influences on my work online, in particular his email newsletter style.

In this interview you will hear Perry explain how he became an Internet marketing expert, his thoughts on affiliate marketing, why content is so important to success online, why Perry says no to most joint venture requests and lots more wisdom about direct marketing online.

Perry Was The First Marketer I Gave My Money To

Perry’s Renaissance Club membership was the first internet marketing information product I ever purchased. Many of the lessons I learned from that package stimulated some of the very early and most successful pillar articles I have ever written, including my two part series on search engine optimization, which was partially inspired by lessons learned from Brad Fallon on the CDs I got from Perry.

I then went on and promoted Perry’s Definitive Guide To Google AdWords as the very first affiliate product I marketed on this blog, way back in 2005.

Although that first affiliate promotion didn’t do so well, a few months later I promoted an event Perry was running which was offering a 50% commission on a $1500 sale, and I managed to make two sales netting my first ever four figure affiliate income payday. That was a momentous achievement for me and enough encouragement to continue down the affiliate marketing path, leading to where I am today.

What I like about Perry is that he rarely does any affiliate promotions and most of his emails are 99% content with a link to one of his products, if any promotion at all. This style of very soft selling, content-driven email marketing was a heavy influence on my own style of email marketing and I recommend you join Perry’s email course just to see how he promotes his products and delivers value through email.

New To Perry Marshall?

I recommend you grab Perry Marshall’s Renaissance Club starter pack if you want a good introduction to Internet marketing.

It’s still one of the most solid starting points I know of if you are new to the Internet and want quality information – especially Perry’s guide to Google AdWords, which comes with the Renaissance Club membership.

I think it was big ol’ Will who introduced you.

  • Yaro,
I love your podcast interviews. Your blog has everything I need to build success in blogging. I don’t know how I would do it without you.

    Chris

  • Hey Yaro,

Would you say that Perry’s lessons are embedded on what you do and what you teach? How deep would that be?

    • How can you quantify life lessons?

He was and remains influential and in fact after this call with him and some experiences I’ve had in the last few weeks, I cemented a decision I was thinking about regarding what I promote this year, which will be quite different from previous years.

  • Hi

I know perry marshall well as I am on his list and he certainly knows his stuff about adwords, not to mention many other areas about internet marketing.

What I like about Perry is that he doesn’t continually spam you with lots of new products and offereings which is a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of the other so called gurus!

If you should listen to anyone about creating a successful online business, then Perry Marshall is a good man to aspire too!

    Thanks

    Grant

  • Looks like another great podcast The thing I love about these podcasts is that you can easily burn them to CD and listen to them in your car. Thanks Yaro. : )

  • Hi Yaro,
I really enjoyed this call. I think one thing that grabbed me out of this call was the “whore” sort of analogy. I definitely want to be a high class call girl rather than your every day street hooker. :)

  • Thanks for this awesome podcast. I’ve forwarded it to a few of my friends and I’m sure they’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

    Andy

  • This is great content, I personally have been doing a lot of research on starting a blog and this is the sort of stuff that I am really looking at to start it up. I know this won’t help a lot of readers but if you could talk about all the other steps to start up a blog, what you did before to start this blog up. Did you make the website yourself or had someone else design it for you. Basically things you do to start a blog.

    • Read through the archives of this blog and all those topics are already covered Mr School. Not sure what that has to do with the interview with Perry though?

  • Yaro, thank you for the great podcast. You always ask all the questions that I would ask, and your interviews always help me determined to have success. Thanks again.

  • I’ve subscribed to Perry’s emails for a few years now, and one of the things I’ve always admired is that his emails are genuinely useful and content-laden. Sure, there’s a product link here and there, but that’s not the focus of his communication.

I also found it quite interesting that, when I sent a response to one of his emails last year, he took the time to personally reply. That’s pretty unusual, in my experience. And it’s part of what keeps me opening his emails, even though hundreds of others are deleted unread.

Perry has made it a point to hone his “personal touch”, as it relates to marketing, and internet marketers would do well to slow down and learn from his approach.

After all, the internet tends to lend itself toward impersonal communication, as if the potential of reaching a large number of people is enough to ensure success – but my observation is that those marketers who transcend the distant nature of the internet to establish real, personal connections are those who enjoy the greatest success in this business.

Thanks for posting this podcast, Yaro.

    Lee

  • Thank you Yaro you just helped me keep going in internet marketing, I hope to see more post from you.

    Thank You
    Derrick

  • The great thing with Perry Marshall is that he is not a hype guy, while all the other e-mail newsletters I receive are screaming nonsense, that reveal all the secrets of marketing universe.

Of course there are product links in Perry’s newsletter, but not all the time and not all over the effing place. Sometimes you will receive one without any promotion. Just good information and something you should think about. His free stuff is already more valuable than all the other stuff I receive and delete after I have read the first three sentence.

There are some of his newsletters with such a good content that I tell them to people who don’t have anything to do with Internet and not even with marketing.

That’s quality. If there are any of this so called guru’s listening and reading, let me tell you this: Listen AND Learn!

(Sorry for my typo’s, I’m Dutch)

  • this is a great interview, very motovational too, its great to see that you started selling his products and had success with it. Thanks for sharing this interview

  • RJ

    Hi Yaro,

I’m looking forward to listening to this interview. I’ve been listening to all the past ones in my car on my drive to work and have found them to be informative and inspiring. I’m sure this one is no different. Thanks for the great content!

  • This interview was my favorite in the series – an opportunity to listen to a down-to-earth expert explain exactly how he manages an excellent list. There is no ego in the way he describes his ascent to his current position. Great stuff.

  • To be honest, I had never heard of Perry Marshall, but now I have another guru to look into and see some of their work, so tyvm!

  • Internet Age

I’ve honestly never heard of Perry Marshall, but will take the gift download and will listen to it. That should familiarise me with his work to better understand what you’re trying to convey here. Thanks for sharing, Yaro!

  • thanks yaro , never heard of perry before but will definitely download this and try to learn as much I can

  • Great podcast with Perry. I wanted to bring to your attention something with yoru podcasts Yaro. A bad thing. Your valume levels are not equal between you and your caller. Usually as in the case of this podcast, I have to turn the volume way up in order to hear your voice, then when Perry comes back on, the volume is so loud that I nearly blast my eardrums out. I thought you should be alerted to this as it is a common occurence with many of your podcasts.
    Larry
PS Your podcasts are very enjoyable and informative though. Just thought you should know.

  • Interesting postcast..
Never heard about Perry Marshall before, thanks Yaro!
