Hi Yaro. Been snooping around your blog and found this article which, although is rather old, still provided me with fantastic information. I was thinking of doing link exchange and some say it is good and others say it is not relevant. Creating a sort of directory on a different domain sounds like a good idea and I will definitely try it. care to get listed? lol

Have a nice day.

Although free traffic (re: search engine placement) is great... let's be realistic there are only so many spaces on the first few pages of search results..and there are tons of companies fighting for that space. I much rather use offline marketing...preferably viral marketing or network marketing....to get the word out and get people to my site.

Jason,

Search traffic is soo important for an online business, I wouldn't give up on it so easily. While sure the most popular basic keywords might be very difficult to compete for, you should be able to get the top results for certain combination keywords, for example by geographic location. I get quite a bit of traffic from a search for example for "Sydney Proofreaders" which wasn't hard to get the top result for.

You just need to niche your keywords.

Offline marking is great too, but doing both is better. With web traffic only going to increase as broadband proliferates you would have to be crazy to not devote time to SEO.

Hey Yaro,

Have you considered paying for a few links to get you started? I've never tried it myself, but I'd be interested to know how succesful a technique it is. It could work well because if you can boost the page rank of your directory quickly (say to a 5 or 6) then you will be able to attract higher quality link partners.

I want to see what the initial PageRank for the directory will be after I point all my current sites to it. Probably a three. Plus I need to populate it with a few quality links (which I don't expect to link back), the industry leading type sites, and also my current link partners.

Maybe in the longer term, but like you I've never paid for links before and I'm not sure I want to start now. I'd rather spend money on click throughs rather than PageRank and the potential traffic onflow from that.
