Good SEO strategies as a whole still (even 5 years later diligence and hard work will always pay off at some point).

Only things which really have done a shift would be the keyword-focused domains (check out doing a Google search for 'credit cards' sometime and see how keyword specific domains stand up against the giants). Other thing I've noticed - bit more of a shift down in terms of Meta Keywords - though still good to be in place, much more of a priority to focus on Meta Descriptions and reinforce with H1 tags and great content!

But even 5 years later, Yaro's still the man!

Great article - easy to read and definitely informative! I agree though with HLT re: domain names though - been seeing keyword focused domains excelling quite well lately (and hard to trump when it comes down to SEO on the first page on Google).

cool to look at SEO advice from so long ago. many of the ideas on page design and basic usability still apply but many of the directories and other search tools no longer exist.

having an interesting explore through Yaro's article history.

Hey Yaro and thanks for this post man. Wonderful information; I wanted to know what to look for in the Overture keyword suggester. Should I look for the amount of times the keyword was used, etc?

Hi Lorri - it's difficult to answer your question. Google is certainly a fantastic sales person and can be used to make direct sales. But it's also a great lead generator and you may only use Google to facilitate connecting you with potential clients.

Google is a marketing channel and can bring people to your business. What type of person you want is up to you and I'm fairly confident Google can bring you whatever type of person you want, so yes, Internet marketing should definitely be a focus.

Hey Yaro,
Here is a question that I know the answer is yes too, but I am curious about the details. My company is a web video production company, we have a website, but don't use it to sell because it is more of a meet the client and discuss stuff type of service.

"If your business is web based and your website is a channel of distribution or your main sales tool then think of Google as your most important salesman."

Should internet marketing still be a focus? Should I still try and use Google as a salesman? What are the benefits?
