This Is One New Publishing Trend I Want To Be A Part Of, And You Should Too (Especially For Bloggers)…
Have you heard of this place called "Moonee Ponds"?
Neither had I, at least until I met Ed Dale.
So there I was, sitting on a train out to moonee ponds to meet up with Ed Dale, Melbourne's most well known Internet marketer and all around geek.
That geekiness has an advantage. Ed is always on top of the latest trends and has an uncanny ability to spot the big ones early.
Ed picked me up and drove us out to a new cafe that has a claim to fame as one of Melbourne's top ten. Given Melbourne is a city of cafes, you have to be very good to make the ten.
While I am not a coffee drinker I did get to taste a rather hefty sandwich Ed ordered that the cafe is known for – the deep fried ham and cheese sandwich.
It was pretty epic – tasty too – and I'm sure containing an incredible amount of calories.

I've Always Wanted To Own A Magazine
While I was with Ed we talked a lot about the future of publishing.
For the last year or so Ed and his team have been working exclusively in the world of digital magazines, in particular for the IOS platform which features the Newsstand (have a look on your iPhone or iPad and you will find it).
I already had some exposure to digital magazines because I was interviewed for inclusion in two of them, Nick Broadhurst's ASPIRE and Nathan Chan's Key To Success.
I was considering starting my own, but it wasn't until this conversation with Ed that I finally decided it was something I *had* to do.
I've loved magazines since I was a kid. Video games were my hobby back then, and truth be told, I loved reading about them in mags more than I did playing the games.
I think it's because of my love of the magazine model that I love blogging so much – they are very similar mediums.
Get In Early
The Newsstand on your iPad and iPhone is still relatively new. Heck, even the iPad and iPhone are pretty new. Yet as Ed constantly points out, they are two of the fastest selling products in human history.
Back in June of this year (2013) Apple stated that over 600 million IOS devices have been sold. Even at just a teeny-tiny share of that audience, you have a lot of potential customers for your magazine.
Off course it's early days still. That's a good thing.
Do you remember all those opportunities that have come on gone and you had your chance to be one of the early adopters and build a leadership position?
First there was Blogging
Then there was Google AdWords PPC
Next came along YouTube
There was also Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and more recently Pinterest
And countless others…
Not every new trend becomes a big platform, but given the sheer size of the audience Apple has, there is a good chance that a magazine launched today is going to have an instant hungry audience.
…and you won't have a whole lot competition for that audience…yet!
Digital magazines are new and they are disrupting a medium that has been popular for years.
Okay, I See The Opportunity, But What About The Money?
Now you're probably wondering how a digital magazine can make money.
Well the obvious thing is to place advertising in it, which you can do for sure. Bloggers know this model well.
What I think is really cool though is you can sell your own digital products directly from the magazine, with instant delivery to a mobile or tablet.
In-Magazine purchases might include PDF reports or ebooks you sell, MP3 audios people can buy, videos, courses – whatever you like.
All avaiable directly from within your magazine, and all a single click away using the Apple ID purchasing system (linked straight to person's credit card – you have probably made a purchase yourself already so you know how easy it is).

There's a lot to talk about regarding digital magazines, like –
– How do you get the content?
– How do you make a nice graphical layout?
– How do you get your magazine into the Newsstand once it is ready?
These are all good questions, which I am studying right now as I go through Ed Dale's training.
My plan is to create some unique content for my magazine, but mostly I will repurpose my blog posts, podcast interviews and youtube videos.
I have plenty of content ready to go, and I bet you do too if you look into your blog archives.
