Do You Need A New Blog Theme?

In case you don’t know, Nate Whitehill and his company UniqueBlogDesigns.com did the design for my blog, which you are looking at right now if you are not reading this through an RSS reader.

I consider Nate and his team the preeminent WordPress blog theme designers and pretty much all my recent design work has been done by them.

A custom blog theme is not essential for success as a blogger, but it certainly helps. Having your own theme, something you are proud of that uniquely identifies you and/or your brand, gives you a sense of ownership, which is actually a motivating factor – it makes you want to blog more often.

Completely custom themes can be expensive, so the next best option is to buy a unique theme, which won’t be universally unique to you, but not many people will use it because it requires a small investment to purchase. Buying a theme is a great way to get something that looks good, is almost unique and helps your blog stand out from the rest.

Theme Wars Launches

Unique Blog Designs have just launched a brand new wordpress theme site called Theme Wars.

Theme Wars is like most wordpress theme sites. You can browse through the catalog of available themes, pick and demo the ones you like and then purchase and download your new theme.

There is one feature that makes the Theme Wars site unique: Designers can submit their theme to battle with other designer’s themes, with the public voting on which themes are the best. The winning themes are then created and made available for sale at the site. The winning designers get a cut of all sales of their theme.

If you’re a blog theme designer it’s worth checking out this service as a possible outlet to sell your work.

If you’re a blogger looking for a new theme it’s worth keeping an eye on the site to see what new themes become available.

You can find out more and see the themes currently battling it out here –

I think the Theme Wars ideas is excellent. It will allow great designers to come through and shine…and give them some deserved exposure.

One reason I purchased my theme (which is not custom) is that it makes things much easier to change once ‘inside’ WordPress. It’s so easy to change the layout, colors, etc.

I’ve been wanting to make my blog theme more what I like and will be changing very soon. I do like my “custom” theme but it’s a real hassle when I try to add code or change it, it always messes up on me. I’ll be sure to check out the resource, thanks.

This was a great piece of information. I found it really useful because I myself own a blog. Therefore, having a unique theme makes sense as it helps to stand out from the crowd. People will be more attracted when they land upon my blog and might want to read more if they are satisfied with the content, of course….

    Most definitely!
An original theme is a must in my opinion. Maybe during the early stages of a new blog it’s ok to use a free theme. But soon as traffic begins to grow one really should either invest the money to buy an original theme or make your own.

Nate is a good guy. His company makes some great themes. I wish I had the money to invest in a custom made theme for some of my sites. For now I am stuck using free themes and stuff I design on my own. The only problem with that is that I have little artistic talent.

I like the idea of designers competing with each other to produce their best. Ultimately customers win. Seems different from asking designers to do spec work which I hate.

IMO, if you want to use your blog for anything more than a personal journal, you do need to invest in a custom theme. The money spent is well worth it. With a little bit (or a lot) of tinkering under the hood, a custom theme will allow you to create a unique online presence. That can go a long way in establishing a strong brand for you and your business.

Thanks Yaro for posting and sharing this resource.

That’s actually a fun idea, although I think it’s important that the war be in some kind of context, such as “best tech theme” or whatever.

You make a good point….perhaps as the site gets bigger they will add categories. A lot of the time theme preference really comes down to what niche it would be used for.

Unique Blog Designs are the creators of the themes of several of my favourite blogs. They offer good value for money, and some freebies too – their just-released free money theme is awesome. I’ve subscribed to their newsletter in order to get my free copy, and am looking forward to playing with it.

The themewars concept is a really great one, which give aspiring designers the opportunity to get their work showcased and peer -reviewed, and if good enough, they can actually make a bit of cash for their efforts.

    Hello Yaro!

Your blog is So Good Looking (not to mention the great content) that I simply must have it! Continuing Congratulations!

Actually, my blog, with Thesis Theme is adequate AND I have backed off the “How I made money online” plot and have gone over to the dark side.

I’m building small niche sites, stacking them up on Hostgator, pinning on a certain keyword, and offering them something they SHOULD be interested in!

It’s more mechanical and less creative, but I’ve made some money and I want a new motorcycle and airplane, plus some “walk around money”.

Thank you for your great blog!
