Podcasting: Can This New Medium Make Money?

Wharton: “The business model for podcasting will be similar to other forms of media — in some cases, advertising, in others, charging for content, or some combination,” he says. “And in many cases, people will do it for reasons other than direct monetization, just like much of the web. It will depend on the publisher and the content. I wouldn’t venture a guess right now whether [advertising or charging for content] will be more prominent or profitable.”

It disappointments me that regardless of how cutting edge podcasting might seem the ideas on how to monetise the media are very oldschool - advertising and subscriptions. It makes sense, radio, the father of the Podcast, functions on an advertising business model. The process of podcasting is quite simple in essence and that is why it succeeds, allowing anyone to become a radio star from their home. Logically the ideas on how to make money from a podcast are just as simple, so they are accessible by the everyday podcaster.

I expect in the near future that the most popular podcasts will be interrupted by “and now a word from our sponsor…” or more covert product placement with podcasters recommending products or services in exchange for a nice endorsement cheque.

I wonder though if any innovators out there will think of other ways to exploit podcasting for profits? How about market research - collecting data on podcast listeners to be sold or leveraged by other companies. I’m sure the technology has the potential to return detailed, saleable statistics. But could this ever be realistic for the average podcaster to consider? Maybe if services like Feedburner provided more detailed statistics on listeners/subscribers that would allow the average podcaster to know exactly what sort of market demographics they are reaching.

Perhaps podcasting will never be a multi-billion dollar industry, but if it allows your average geek to get an audience from the comfort and anonymity of their own home we might gain access to some bright minds that may never have exposed themselves or even had a chance to demonstrate their experiences and intellect using traditional media. Again this is the long tail in effect as technology allows people to become a big fish in a small pond.

I for one intend to see how far this technology takes me.

It seems that the battle of proprietory platform is dead (so there goes an idea about a proprietary reader), as is (to a lessor extent)stealing information about people in exchange for value(like gator)… I reckon it will probably go the way of the John Laws show… “You know, I really like toyotas. In fact my family and i just bought the new…..”

I can’t see ‘and now a word form our sponsors’ working out, especially given the steep decline in peoples attention spans (as seen in the decline in TV ads penetration, and in the steep increase in occurence and complexity in product placements).
Perhaps we’ll see some sort of response based promotions model. You talk up a service, and direct your listeners to a link on your page. Essentially just promoting a link- an extention of google adwords, but you create and hype the copy. I click a lot of links in your articles, just imagine if you were makin 50c or more a click :)

I’m not yet too familiar with podcasting but just thinking there might be some possible business opportunities in translating podcast contents into other languages just like books, magazines and TV programs are translated into and distributed in various languages between countries.

Yaro, in 2003 radio and outdoor advertising was a USD$55 billion business worldwide. The model works. When you’re trying to build a business in a brand new paradigm, it’s nice to have an existing model to apply to it. But you’re right - it would be very exciting if we could develop NEW ways to monetize our content. If you have any ideas, drop me a line!

I’d like to see the name changed - podcasting - why - because of one manufacturer of an MP3 player (arguably not the best one either). What does this lead to - tacit advertising - ABC radio here in Australia who have increasing numbers of programs available in MP3 format - mention on air - “just download it to your Ipod”. Great advertising.

Making money from audiocasts - old school or new school, if you think of a way, patent it! (IP I mean).

There are definate limits to delivering content in audio at this point as it’s less interactive than even text. Yaro start doing flashcasts!!!!
