I'd like to see the name changed - podcasting - why - because of one manufacturer of an MP3 player (arguably not the best one either). What does this lead to - tacit advertising - ABC radio here in Australia who have increasing numbers of programs available in MP3 format - mention on air - "just download it to your Ipod". Great advertising.

Making money from audiocasts - old school or new school, if you think of a way, patent it! (IP I mean).

Yaro, in 2003 radio and outdoor advertising was a USD$55 billion business worldwide. The model works. When you're trying to build a business in a brand new paradigm, it's nice to have an existing model to apply to it. But you're right - it would be very exciting if we could develop NEW ways to monetize our content. If you have any ideas, drop me a line!

I'm not yet too familiar with podcasting but just thinking there might be some possible business opportunities in translating podcast contents into other languages just like books, magazines and TV programs are translated into and distributed in various languages between countries.

It seems that the battle of proprietory platform is dead (so there goes an idea about a proprietary reader), as is (to a lessor extent)stealing information about people in exchange for value(like gator)... I reckon it will probably go the way of the John Laws show... "You know, I really like toyotas. In fact my family and i just bought the new....."

I can't see 'and now a word form our sponsors' working out, especially given the steep decline in peoples attention spans (as seen in the decline in TV ads penetration, and in the steep increase in occurence and complexity in product placements).
Perhaps we'll see some sort of response based promotions model. You talk up a service, and direct your listeners to a link on your page. Essentially just promoting a link- an extention of google adwords, but you create and hype the copy. I click a lot of links in your articles, just imagine if you were makin 50c or more a click :)
