Wow, figuring all of this out on my own would be a nightmare - even having your blog as a reference, I can see all of this taking an immense amount of time to learn. But that's what separates those who have massive success from those who just can't seem to get over a hump. I will ponder over all of this. Thank you!

Great article Yaro! This morning a friend sent me a link to the review on the Headway theme. From there I subscribed to your blog and came across this article. I look forward to reading your future blog posts. OBTW, I usually abandon posts that are this long but yours held my interest all the way to the end!

I'm aiming to be a great internet marketer and your comments about building targeted email lists that convert...are very, very relevant.

Internet marketers never get enough credit, it's very hard for most people to make money blogging, and being an author seems hit or miss. It's an excellent question that's got my wheels turning. It's dependent upon so many things but when talking the best of the best... authors (ex. JK Rowling). There could easily be a blogger or internet marketer who makes more than her, but I can't think of any. But on average... I would say internet marketers. Each comes with their own risks.

Hey Yaro,

Really appreciate the effort you put into this one,

Maybe you mentioned it already,

Did you list Public Speaking, you know, talking in public at internet marketing gigs?

I know this is MASSIVE in the US, public speaking is big there anyway,
I think not so big in Australia.

I'd say I fall under the blogger category. I just started my blog a little over a month ago. Haven't had much progress as far as RSS subscribers go, but I'm dedicated and I realize it takes time. Right now just focusing on content. Great post by the way!!

Your Message
Yaro,

You have laid out a brilliant business model or strategy for the person who has the skills to incorporate all three mediums: blogger, author, and internet marketer. We always hear about "repurposing". Well, this is repurposing in its basic form, I think.

Thank you, Yaro, for writing posts that get my creative juices flowing when I'm feeling like I've run out of gas (and ideas on how to differentiate myself from the rest).

I think collaboration of the three makes you earn most, you will still need the skills of a blogger and an internet marketer even if you're already an author

Hi Yaro,
I enjoyed reading this post which looks realistic to me.
From my experience, I agree with the blogger and author points.
I didn't know about the Internet marketers which sounds interesting to me.

I think my point got a little lost, my fault. Let me re phrase: I was attempting to define what I thought it meant to be a "problogger", "blogger", "internet marketer". Regardless of niche, topic, industry, or whatever interests me personally.

I view it like a spectrum, on one end you have media companies, on the other end you have "traditional" bloggers. Ill start on one end.

media companies: like techcrunch, mashable, caradvice, talking point memo the list goes on and on. Once were blogs run by one person, but have grown in traffic and revenue and now opperate as a media company, employing multiple paid bloggers, lawyers, ad managers, events around the world, making millions a year.

problogger: someone who can make a full time income from blogging primarily through ad networks, direct advertising, etc. Like Perez hilton, or Dooce.com, or darren at DPS. Meaning they only focus on delivering content primarily, there product is their content. THESE types of people are the very few. That was my original point.

Think about it, like you always say, if you want to make big money you have to have something to offer, something to sell. This is ONE of many reasons why people fail at trying to become probloggers b/c they think there going to make a killing with adnetworks alone. People to do that you have to have hundereds of thousands if not millions of uniqe visitors a month. For most, this will never happen. As such, most people have to make products and leverage their blog and when they do...

They just now beacame internet marketers: an entreprenur that leverages his blog into email lists and product offerings, affiliate marketing etc. on top of doing everything that a pro blogger does (ie good compelling content and seo). The person behind highonhealth.org fits this. An internet marketer is not just limited to the MMO industry, it can be any topic.

Traditional bloggers: People who use there blog as a journal and make no money off it, and have no intention to make money off it, or have NO IDEA how to make money off it.

To your point, Frank Kerr is an internet marketer writing on another internet marketers blog. "Internet Marketer" shouldent be a bad word, you can still care about your content and your readers, I just use it as a way to describe how someone makes a living full time in this game.

CEMIL: so sorry to hear you got taken for a ride. It takes a long time. I do SEM and make a full time living of the internet, I also have a blog that Im growing and want to make it into something like timsykes.com,

(its not utkemonster.com, thats just my personal site) im 26, and have been doing this since i was 20, i have a netork of niche sites that makes me more than enough to live off and I have a blog that im trying to grow into an authority site. Where I am today is the culmination of years of decisions and ACTION. Action is what separates the winners from the loses. Learn all that you can, but dont forget to start taking action. Don't take all advice at face value, test it. Also, make sure its something that your passionate about, like I always tell my friends who want to do what i do b/c they think they will be happier/successfull, but hate to write and have no interest in the interent other than making money:

If you chase your passions the money will follow, if you chase the money, your like everyone else.

I view it like a spectrum, on one end you have media companies, on the other end you have “traditional” bloggers.

As such, most people have to make products and leverage their blog and when they do…

“Internet Marketer” shouldent be a bad word, you can still care about your content and your readers, I just use it as a way to describe how someone makes a living full time in this game.

Don’t take all advice at face value, test it. Also, make sure its something that your passionate about, like I always tell my friends who want to do what i do b/c they think they will be happier/successfull, but hate to write and have no interest in the interent other than making money:

If you chase your passions the money will follow, if you chase the money, your like everyone else.

What difference does it make any way? I know a plumbing contractor who employs five people, who all make a decent living and enable him to make a great deal more than just a living. If you do what you do well and in the right spirit, you can make money doing just about anything. There is also that element of providence that makes or breaks careers and if one accepts that life can be very successful.

Hi Yaro,
I think you are spot on - myself being a fledgling internet entrepreneur, this is just the type of smart & sane thinking I need. After reading hundreds of pages and forums of advice I am full and overwhelmed by theoretical knowledge of what to do but trying to do everything is frustrating = building pages & adding content, building links, creating digital products, etc. I tried several niches and even bought an already built site, but except pennies had no monetary reward yet. I simply do not know how to prioritize tasks & what exactly to do. I've been trying to do everything myself till now, but this seems to be too much, so I now finally have the curage to try some outsourcing (never tried it, so had some reservations about it). Also, the site I bought has an email list, which has grown to several hundred addresses without me using it even once. I am now confident I need to focus on the email list & outsource the tedious task that can be reasonably well defined. The internet marketers you mentioned - I am pretty sure they have long journeys behind them to get to their present efficiency levels...

PS: I just found your site today and this is the first post I read, but I surely am going to read others too :-)

Very nice article, i think it is a mix of all three. If you don´t have blogging skills you didn´t create nice content, if you don´t have online marketing skills you will not sell ads or make money through affiliate marketing!

IM doesn't have to be quick and dirty. if you really want to sell a lot of product, you still should use IM techniques. There are a lot of ways to go about getting traffic and/or search engine rankings. Some of those techniques are better for long term strategies.

There's another option open to prolific authors who want to get paid. It beats writing free ebooks in the hope somebody will buy something one day.

There are plenty of sites out there looking to do better in search engines. These companies hire SEO specialists. Most SEO guys are incapable of writing interesting content aimed at their client's target market. SEO guys expect their clients to come up with the content, which they will then optimise.

Most of their clients are either incapable of creating interesting content, or too busy. Catch-22.

A good author can get paid very well for writing 250-300 word articles destined for web sites undergoing optimisation. It all works best when the content appears gradually over time, rather than all at once - which generates regular work.

A smart author might even seek out lots of SEO guys, and keep him/herself as occupied as s/he wants.

That really depends on the actual participation of each of them in the internet. Normally, internet marketers profits them selves relatively high compare to bloggers and writers since their action is confined only to specific business strategy.
