How Fitness Freak Ryan Lee Became A Millionaire Information Marketer

By Yaro Starak
44 Comments

Ryan LeeRyan Lee has a really impressive story, one that any person who has a passion that involves helping other people with problems, should hear.

Ryan started out as a personal trainer and all around fitness freak. He worked hard to educate himself and then worked hard to build up a client base of people he helped as a personal trainer. That passion eventually lead to starting a website to share information about personal training, which eventually became a six figure online membership site, then several and eventually a multi-million dollar information publishing business.

It all started with just Ryan, which is what makes this story so inspiring. Ryan literally started out just like you are probably right now – with nothing but your mind and body as a vehicle for leverage to build a business. He knuckled down, studied hard, served people and then leveraged the power of the Internet to break free of financial limitation.

You will hear Ryan’s passion in this interview, plus as I like to do, whenever Ryan said he did something, I stop and ask him the exact steps – like how exactly did he build his first website (with MS Frontpage!) and get traffic to it, and then how did he turn it into a membership site?

This is a great interview, go listen to it now, and after you are done check out Ryan’s site to learn more about what he does and how you can do it too – RyanLee.com

  • Great interview, Yaro.

I’ve been one of Ryan’s customers for years…I was on his newsletter list when I first started getting into internet marketing and met him at an event in Austin. I was chatting with him at a Ruth’s Chris restaurant one of the evenings and a few of us started doing some random pushups in the middle of the restaurant, which was interesting as some involved moving around the room and frog hopping etc which gave the waitresses a fun new challenge.

Other than that first event, all of the internet marketing seminars I’ve been to have been put on by Ryan.

  • Ryan’s story is awesome! This is the story of a man using what he loves and truly applying it to the internet business. Our health is really important. Possibly the most important thing out there so to help others and yet still benefit from it is a double whammy! Props to you, Ryan!

    • Sorry, put this in the wrong post. This was meant for Ryan’s:

You’re not kidding. Hard work on persistence and this has really paid off for Ryan. Did I hear the numbers right? He charges $97/month for his inner circle, which has over 4,000 subscribers?! That’s over $400,000/month!! Incredible. Truly incredible.

I also love how Ryan is so family-oriented. It is refreshing to see someone so successful have such a focus on family.

      Yaro, keep these coming!

  • I can’t wait for the transcripts to be posted! Sick kids alternating with busy kids’ summer schedules has me scrambling to keep up with my Special Needs resource blog. In fact, I’ve had to give myself permission to be a review and giveaway blog for most of this summer because I’m so behind in everything that I’m taking care of my sponsor obligations but not writing much content. I’m very serious about blogging as a profession and don’t want to put blog development on hold as well. I do not have 55 minutes to watch a video, but am a fast reader and can make time once the transcripts are up. Thanks for the great information!

  • This is a great interview. I always appreciate it when you give us a peek behind the curtian of other people’s businesses and how they started them. This way we can all learn from the pitfalls and successes of others so that we don’t have to make them ourselves.

    • I totally agree with you, Joshua! You couldn’t have said it better.

  • Wow, that was great! Ryan you have to be congratulated on being so generous in sharing your story with Yaro.

What pressed my buttons was Ryan’s normality (wife and kids, family attachments etc) – sorry to hear about your mum passing away, your mother will live on through your children. Anyway, you shared a great story that gives all of us a real sense of hope for our own businesses.

Thanks Yaro and Ryan for the interview.

  • Ryan is a good guy and I’ve learned quite a few things from him. Stephen Pierce’s presentation at his Continuity Summit was awesome,

  • I just read this article and I find his story very inspiring. I hope a lot of people will strive hard just like Ryan. Keep it up!

  • Ohhh, I know Ryan, I’ve heard him speak once before but I forget where it was hosted (mp3).

His story is really inspiring, I’d love to start a membership site but a lot of the things I work on may not be the type that people would subscribe to.

I’ll have to play around with it, maybe I’ll learn some from the interview :)

  • It is really a good thing that you know all the sides, the whole scope, and the generality of the niche you are in. Because then, you will be able to know which part of it would make an impact to the market and how to properly deal with it.

  • Jon

The story of Ryan is an important example of the fact that to be successful (online and offline) you need most of all one single thing…: PASSION about something, in this case fitness!

  • An inspiration to ALL of us, that this can be done.

This shows that Great Incomes ARE achievable online.

BUT, it takes work and time.

But then again, Which Business does not take work and time?

  • At the point where Yaro and Ray were discussing 100K per month being a fair amount of money for someone to make, I’m sure many of us were trying not to let envy creep into the experience.

One thing I particularly liked about Ray’s report is his going against the mantra, particulary popular in Belgium, that you do everything better when you do it yourself. NO! Hire a professional instead. Yes I like that, provided I have the steady income so that I know that those extra two hours I win by not mowing the lawn will be well spent making more money doing what I’m a professional at.

On that very token, Ray said he would have hired a virtual assistant from day 1. Yes, because with hindsight he knows he would be making enough money. But without the hindsight it is probably wise not to hire people to do the dirty work, until you know you’re profitable enough to afford them. I’m sure for every Ray who wished he’d hire earlier, there are many unknowns out there who went bankrupt because they hired too soon.

Another thing I liked was his end message, including “don’t read the news”. That’s an interesting thought: I can testify my morale is often undermined by things that are not related to the success or failure of my occupation, just morally undermining altogether. The news sure is a prime example of that.

    Thanks for another great interview.

  • The other commentators have nailed it. Great interview. Especially the way Ryan communicated his passion. THE essential ingredient to everything worthwhile in life.

“the only path that matters, is the one with heart.”

  • I learned that often, having passion is not enough. We need to do hard work on top of our passion to achieve our goals and earn a lot at that. Thanks.

    • I think you need both. You need to be passionate about what you are doing. Otherwise you can burn out.

  • Lou

Great piece. Nice to be inspired by someone who was once where I am now and only had his mind and body to leverage from. Words to go by!

  • I’ve got one for you. It’ll help your clients improve their health and performace AND be an additional profit center to your business…

  • His story is truly inspirational. It is great to hear when people who are passionate about what they love succeeded.

  • Great story, but I wonder why i cant make so much money like him, haha. It is true that if you are passionate about something and work hard then you can definitely achieve it.

  • Great interview on multiple levels.

    I like the key practices:
    - produce model
    - partnership model
    - turnkey / flipping
    - connect with the key players in the niches
    - deep in the niches

I especially like the comparison of business partners and dataing and trusting your gut response — and betting on good people for complex relationships.

  • This is a really inspirational story and will motivate us all.

It proves that with the right attitude and committment, anything is possible.

    Jen.

  • Thanks for sharing this. Helping others is really the key to succeed online. If we help someone to become successful, I’m sure that we’ll be successful as well. More people will like us if we are capable of helping others, and if we are capable of helping others, surely, we can also help ourselves to succeed.

    Regards,

    Gary

  • I guess he already made his name in the fitness area so people recognized him from there.

  • All of us guys struggling to get a foothold in the Internet Marketing scene need inspirational people and stories to keep us going through the hard times. Ryan’s story proves the adage that you must never give up until you hold your dream in your hands.

    Tony

  • Billant story and an inspiration! MS Frontpage for the win! haha

  • Way to go Ryan; very inspiring story

  • Marriott Hotels India and Google India were the first and second runners-up, respectively. The announcements were made on Friday in Mumbai.

  • I wasn’t trolling, I just said that the video quality was bad because we can only hear one of you well… and you don’t pass the comment through? What a disappointment.

  • Dude please delete this comment and #30! Sorry! Got confused because there are two places to comment on this video and I couldn’t find my comment… actually it was approved but I was in the wrong place. Thanks and my bad!

  • This is interesting because personally, I am a fitness freak too. I used to spend about 4 hours a day in gym but reduce now to 1 hour a day, 5 times a week.

  • Ryan,

Thanks for the inspiration, and reminding us that you can make money and be passionate about what you are doing, both…

The health and fitness industry needs a lot more entrepreneurs just like you!

  • What’s really important, towards the end of the podcast really rang true for me. Being there for my family when many other people are stuck in the 9to5 ball and chain.
    Truly a great podcast.
    Looking forward to more.

  • It’s still not illegal because the argument is made that the consumer should ask questions before agreeing to anything, and you should always make certain you repeat your understanding of any situation before entering into a purchase…

  • Great interview, its a very inspiring story. Thanks for sharing it.

  • I have a friend who is absolutely passionate about fitness, has competed in competitions before, hes just getting started in internet marketing, in the past hes pitched ideas to me about starting some websites for his local fitness company, definitely gonna share this with him perhaps to give him some insight from a fellow fitness person. :)

    Till then,

    Jean

  • Very info-rich interview, Yaro.

I’ve been following Ryan Lee for several months now, but I didn’t know all chronology of how he came up to where he is now. Super insightful.

This is also special for me, since Ryan linked to the interview on his blog, and that’s how I found your blog. That led me to listen to your other podcasts, read many of your articles, and decide to join both Membership Site Mastermind and Blog Mastermind.

So if any of you are wondering whether interviews work…they do. :-)

    • That’s great feedback Sunni, thank you.

Welcome to my programs – it sure is interesting to hear how you found out about them and joined.

  • Great interview and a wonderful story about the gains of hardwork and determination. A motivational piece if ever there was.

  • Moe

I designed his http://www.ryanlee.com website Last August. Since then, he has forwarded me over 20 of his inner circle members for website design and wordpress integration. If anyone is interested contact me at schazy@gmail.com.

Doesn’t this claim sound spammy to you: “learn how to make $10,000 a month, from only blogging 2 hours per day”? When I see shit like this I walk away and never came back. My 2 cents.
