The PageRank update (learn about PageRank) has been occurring over the past 24-48 hours. My friend Alborz, who manages the MyWeblog free blog hosting service has been jumping up and down with glee as his blog went to a PageRank 5. Regardless of what you think about PageRank, an increase can really put a smile on a webmaster’s face.
The webmaster over at MSN.com might not be too happy however because presently it appears that the site has fallen from a PageRank of 9 to a PageRank 2. Speculation is rife that Google has done this deliberately as a slap in the face from one web giant to another. The SEOChat forums are discussing the topic right now.
I hope PageRank was good to you today!

I have moved from a 3 to a 4 with this update. While it is mearly ‘bragging rights’ but somewhere someone made up an algorithm to ’see’ good content, and hopefully my content is becoming more ‘good’.
ha. personally I think it’s going the other direction, but that’s just me.
Yaro - The news about MSN precipitous decline in page rank couldn’t have come at a better.
Now, I can finally say with a straight face: “I rank better than MSN.”
Thanks for the chuckle.
that explains why i went from a 5 to a 6 overnight. huh.
thanks for the update yaro.
best - mp
MP- Actually you know I noticed that your site using the typepad address has had a PR 6 for a while but the smallbusinessbranding.com domain hadn’t caught up yet. Either way a 6 is great!
It seems that an awful lot of people suddenly got a PR of 5.
Overnight, my blog jumped from PR 0 to PR 5, which amused me somewhat.
I would love to know exactly what Google did, because it justs seems odd.
Mind you, while it is nice to have a good PR, I really am not that bothered about it.
I hardly have any reciprocal links on my site, so it can’t be that.
One of my client’s web sites went from PR 0 to PR 3, which surprised me.
I only registered his domain in April and it has no content to speak of, just a scan of his business card.
Seems a bit odd to me.
I wonder how it affected the people that have been link-exchanging like mad with the likes of SEO Elite?
I just started my t-shirt site in July and I went from a 0 to a PR 7. I was really shocked it was that high. But I have been doing some advertising lately and getting some steady traffic. I’m also guessing it has a lot to do with my site having quite a few links built in.
Woohoo! Google rocks
I will support and praise anything Google does to undermine M$ any day.
Hey Cotton Gear - I’d say your PR7 is because your site is hosted on cafepress.com, which is a PR9 site. One link from a PR9 often is enough to get a PR7.
hey Yaro- yes, being hosted by CafePress definitely is a big part of it but there are many sites on there with only a PR3-PR5. One link from a PR9 is not enough alone to get a PR7.
I think one link from a PR9, along with enough other reasonably high PR links (not 9s) could do it. How many backlinks do you have?
I tried a backlink lookup on yahoo and basically this blog was the only recorded backlink to your domain. Then I tried your other URL, http://www.cafepress.com/cottongear, and there were none.
Yeah, I don’t have many backlinks — only ones where I have posted in forums or advertised. Although it’s not surprising since it’s just a t-shirt shop without any real text or content. People really aren’t going to be writing about it. They just come in, shop and leave without any comments.
It seems that all shops with CafePress should then have a high PR rank, no?
My shop is currently ranked #9 in popularity out of 43k+ so I’m sure that is a big factor.
…This on the day that google reports record profits (up by 96% on last years figures)!
It is a dark day if that speculation is correct. This one time ‘friendly’ online environment is becoming polluted by big business and their war mongering. And as always, it will be the people that will be the casualities of war. Shouldnt be surprised though, it was only a matter of time that reality crept into the online world.
Publicly listing google was bound to have these effects. Sure hope those shareholders are happy with their paper profits. As an aside, I have been noticing the diminishing quality of google search results. I suppose this was also to be expected as they diverted their attention and diversified their income streams. Its still a shame.
My once high regard for google is beginning to wane.
Wow, thanks for the heads up Yaro. I’ve only installed the PR extension to Firefox a few weeks ago. I haven’t tried at all, in any way to increase my PR, I have no reciprocal links at all. This latest round of updates seems to have been kind. My main site is now a PR4 (up from 3) and Many of the posts on my site have jumped one or two PRs. My most popular page (a footnotes plugin for WordPress, now accumulating quite a number of back links) jumped from PR0 to PR5. Got to be happy about that, given I haven’t tried.

It’s unfortunate but people shouldn’t be so worried about page rank. Stop creating a Web site tailored to Google, and just create the thing. Use techniques to help with SEO? Sure, but create your Web site(s) with the sole purpose or intention of getting #1 on Google is a waste of time.
It’s better to create something that people will use or be interested in (maybe SER - search engine result - 5 - 100) than be the first and have people just glance over the site and leave a few seconds/minutes later.
I forgot where I saw it, but I thought I saw that studies show the first SER in Google is, usually, never what people are looking for.
I’m so sick of the Google this, Google that, or “SEO TECHNIQUES !!!! GUARANTEED #1 SPOT IN GOOGLE!!!!” b.s.
Build a bridge and get over it.
[…] Entrepreneur’s Journey There has been a war brewing between Microsoft and Google as Google is expanding very fast and competeing with MSN and Microsoft in general as to the control they have over the future of information. […]
I jumped from a PR0 to a PR5. I’ve only been running my blog for about 3 months, so I’m pumped!
In looking at the ratings and icons it looked like most everything except the most basic (and even some of them) were in dispute as to importance/usefulness. As regards Macro$haft(tm) and Google they are becoming very similar in some respects. And that’s not a compliment for Google.
Build a site that has content of value to the visitor and is easy to use. Then make it look pleasing. Then you can try all the search engine techniques you want, only by then you probably won’t need to
It’s all a game “mine is bigger/faster/higher than yours” in which no one really wins, even when they get ahead.
My PR for one site went from 1-3 overnight, as did another personal page that’s a cloaked redirect (something SE’s usually hate). Frankly I don’t know why - they have little content as yet being under developement. Another has been at 4 for ages without an update in content in a couple of months. Spending time trying to second guess the SE’s is a waste of time of which there seems less and less every day and I for one would rather put into my site. On that note … back to my redesign, hopefully in time for CSS Reboot.
Who knows, maybe I’ll add another PR point or two
Hi everyone. Here’s my 2 cents worth on the subject.
To be honest, so long as I get lots of ‘targeted’ visitors, constructive feedback, and user interaction on my website, (which have always been the goals), I couldn’t give a monkeys toss about Google PR.
Surely it’s all about people finding your site and enjoying/benefiting from what you have to offer? It seems that a lot of webmasters these days forget why they started their projects in the first place, and somewhere along the line they become a little obsessed with PR, SEO, and the like. Even I went through a period where I was spending more time than was healthy researching this subject.
Anything that can help to raise your site’s profile, including a good PR, can do no harm of course. If nothing else, the Google ranking seems to keep webmasters focused on improving both the layout and quality of their site’s content, and this can only be a good thing, but there still appears to be some sites with a high PR for no apparent reason! e.g. poor content, little content, no or few back links etc etc
My home page went from a 4 to a 5 whereas some other pages on the site went down from a 5 to a 4 or in a couple of cases a 3.
My website has been online for a little over 4 months now and as it’s my first ever project so I have nothing the measure this against. Therefore I have no real idea if my PR’s are poor, average, good, or excellent and reading some of the comments before this one, there is no real clarification on this. Okay, that’s me, I’m done!
BTW, great site Yaro. I’ve been visiting for a while now but this is the first time I’ve participated.
Cheers
Aitch
Right on the money Aitch - well done with your site too! Good tight niche and a good concept.
Hey Guys, Its great to see that everyone got a boost in their PR. But I was thinking, if everyone reaches a high PR wouldn’t the high PR sites, then wouldnt the whole PR market become saturated. Not saturated per see, I mean like suppose you have a club that only the cool persons could get into. Everyone would really really want to be in the club, but suppose the same club came out and said thay everyone could join then the demand to join the club the club how be less.
ANyways, Really Really Off Topic here:
I am soon to be starting my blog, And I am wondering how much Hard-drive Space and Bandwidth would it consume. I have plans on added additional blogs in the future around 2 more before christmas.
Im trying to save some $$, im going for a $3.99 a month with 1 GIG of Space and 10 GB of bandwidth, is that ok.
Can you post your current hard-drive and bandwidth consumation please.

[…] I read today on Entrepreneurs Journey that MSN.COM gets a Google PageRank of 2 in the recent Google PageRank update! […]
Google’s going to become the big playground bully that “lets” everyone be his friend. At first they go along with it because they think maybe this guy’s genuinely cool and maybe they’ll score some social points for appearing to be aligned with him but they eventually realize he’s just a creepy jerk.
Just recently, I’ve noticed that my Google Page Rank moved to 6 from 5. Back at the begining of the Summer it was 4. Can someone comment on how my Page Rank increased for http://www.cwimedical.com
