The Ultimate Business Holiday?

Jamsi has an interesting idea (or is this a dream?):

What if you took a holiday for the sheer purpose of creating your ultimate web application, with hope of joining the ranks with successful’s such as digg, myspace and Google. Picture this, caravan within walking distance to the beach, power outlet for your laptop, cupboard full of food and drink and only yourself to talk to. This is the new-age hermit. Simply up and go, leaving everything behind.

Mornings would consist of runs along the beach, swims in the surf and a big hot breakfast to get you started. Days would consist of on and off development, while another project such as getting fit, learning an instrument or building a boat, could remain your other objective. Nights would be left to your desire, and Jack Daniels would always be your friend.

All for 4 weeks. With no distractions. A lot would get done eh?

What do you think? Would this be a productive working environment for you?

My current lifestyle is almost like this in the sense that I am living exactly where I want to be and I use my time to work on the projects I want to, plus my cupboards are full of food, I exercise a lot to keep fit and I can do what I want with my nights and, well…it’s pretty darn good! No beach or that wonderful sound of waves crashing to lull you to sleep, but not bad all the same.

What’s your dream working lifestyle?

You’re a lucky man Yaro, I wish I had that luxury. Though as you said, waking to the sound of crashing waves is probably the best (and missing) part :)

I like the idea of a caravan with no internet connection as a productivity holiday, it’s all too easy to get distracted and VPN into work.

Even if your surroundings are very good at home, it can be difficult to disconnect from everyday life and give yourself the time and space to be creative.

Wow! That sounds like heaven. For those of us with kids, I would like to add that the kids would be on holiday with their grandparents. Now that’s a total break!

A few years ago, that would have been nice. Right now, I wouldn’t want to leave the fiance for 4 weeks, and I just bought a house on the water. Granted, it is a 4 foot deep brook and not the ocean, but its better than living above a couple of smokers.

4 weeks? At this point of my life (wife, busy job and two young children) I would be happy with 4 days of such a lifestyle.

Hey everyone…that would sound like a perfect vacation for me! I always dreamed of being able to sit by the beach laptop in hand and run a million dollar digital empire!

    off topic…

what are some good ideas for web businesses that can be slightly automated. I know Yaro has an editing business… what other service could be provided online? I really want to start something..but have no idea what.

Jay, what about some sort of affiliate store? It would require a heck of a lot of work in terms of marketing, but once it’s up, all you’re doing is refering people to products and getting paid to do it! (Upon purchase that is)

It’s a flooded market though. I suggest you maybe raise your questions/ideas in the EJ forum.

I think that’s a great idea, IF you have a definite purpose and a burning desire to get it done (shades of Napoleon Hill there).

Depending on your personality though, you might start to go mad after about 3 days, what with all that JD and all :P

I think it’s an awesome idea, but taking a full month off my normal job would be hard.

It will work because it has been done for years in other professions. The idea is no different to what writers have been doing for years to knock out a book or film. Also same as bands going to studios in remote locations to bang out an album. Places like Byron Bay, Port Douglas and the Mornington Peninsula have became havens for creative types to start and finish their projects without distraction. Though the kicker for business people / tech guys would be to have the self control and ability to switch off from email, phone, IM, and web for the “working holiday” timeframe. I just don’t see that happening.

Hmm, good points Anthony. I can’t exactly “switch off” email for any length of time at the moment. I’d like to be able to do that one day without risk to my income flows.

Right now my current projects are really slowing down my future projects – Blog Traffic School in particular. It’s acceptable but it’s funny since my older business is now like the job where in the past it used to be my passion while I had a “real job” (part time). I considered my business as where real freedom for me existed in the future. Interesting cycle – greater freedoms with each new occupation though, which is fantastic.

That being said part of my current life is interacting with others over email, skype and IM, and are things I don’t want to “escape from” so I’d probably choose to take them with me on a creative holiday anyway.
