PageRank Update – July 2006

Ahh, do you remember how we used to get all excited about the “Google Dance”, that period when Google updates the little green PageRank bar? Remember? Well apparently a lot of people still get very excited about it and it’s occurring right now – PageRank is updating!

If you have never heard the term PageRank head over to this page and have PageRank explained to you.

While some may argue PageRank is next to useless Webmasters and bloggers alike still love to see the little green bar climb higher, or for those with brand new websites, to finally see how well your site ranks.

Personally I stopped getting excited about PageRank ever since my blogs hit 6 since it’s very hard to get to a 7 and I haven’t done enough to warrant a 7 as yet. Although if my rankings dropped I would definitely be annoyed.

While I can’t say this conclusively I have noticed that if I point my two PageRank 6 blogs to any other page I can basically create PageRank 5 pages, which as I mentioned last time there was a PageRank update, seems to indicate that most sites have a PageRank that is simply the highest PageRank backlink of the site minus one. So if I have PageRank 7 sites linking to my site it very likely will be a 6. This of course makes sense given how PageRank is intended to work, but it does seem a little silly since if you have control of high ranked sites you can create more high ranked sites simply by linking them together.

Case in point – my Blog Traffic School pre-launch blog has gone from PageRank 0 to 5 for it’s first update and I’m pretty sure that 5 is there because of links from Entrepreneurs-Journey.com and SmallBusinessBranding.com. Not that I am complaining of course.

I hope PageRank has been kind to you today!

Yaro, you’ve mentioned your pagerank theory in the past, but I’m a little sceptical that it would work that way so simply. Is one PR7 backlink better or worse than ten PR6 backlinks?

I don’t know, can’t claim to have that elusive knowledge of Google’s inner workings!

All the same, congratulations on your PR so far – you must be doing something right!

One interesting note from my site. http://www.improvehuman.com/blog/ now has a pagerank of 3. But http://improvehuman.com/blog/ (ie no www) has a pagerank of 4.

I notice it is the other way round on this site. With the ‘www’ Entrepreneur’s Journey has pagerank of 6, but without it only has a pagerank of 4.

I find it a little strange that essentially the same page can be ranked so differently.

It’s too bad Google doesn’t update PR more often, so more people would be interested in it.

I think I am still in the Google sandbox, my site is only 2 months old, hence, no soup or pagerank for me.

    both my sites
Car Advice and New Brisbane put jumped from PR 0 to PR5 in less than 2 months. Thanks mainly to Yaro for having the linked in his sidebar, nevertheless, I also had many other PR6 links coming in, so I am not 100% sure of the PageRank theory yaro, mainly because one of my other blogs went from PR0-5 as well and that has no links from a PR6 site, just lots and lots of PR5 backlinks.

Oh and Jospeh, Google does update the PR on a daily basis, they just export the results on a 3-4 monthly basis otherwise it would be too hard

Allan Pritt’s post above made me check my site
both with and without the www.

my url is so long most often I leave out the www.

Thanks for the heads up about the Google dance
hope we all come out OK

Gerard – very good question! I have no idea either and I don’t think many people could claim to have conclusive proof regarding any propositions we make about PageRank. It’s fun to speculate though.

How right you are! I run a couple of different sites on various topics and watching their performance in Google (and other engines) is fascinating. Often makes you forget about doing the real work, though. :(

My blog Google PageRank is 5 at the moment, and I my company site has a pagerank 1 even though they are linked 2-way. I bet it still requires lots of readers to generate high ranked site.

Thanks for the fine site & content Yaro, your site is definitely worth reading.

Zulit went from 0 to 4 which is what I expected. I pretty darn sure the snapshot Google took was over a month ago.

Whatever your PR is showing at the time is never the true and present PR. It’s like looking at your Google adsense account. Whatever you see for income at a given time, is old news.

What I don’t like about the Google model is the inbound link bias. I’ve seen a lot of sites (not mine) that have excellent and substantial content, but without others linking to them, they don’t see the light of day.

I suppose that if a web resource DOES indeed have great content, webmasters will link to it eventually.

Speculation. It seems a primary unwritten concept in any article involving Google.
We speculate on what Google wants to get a good PR.
We speculate on what Google considers bad to PR.
We speculate on what this PR thing is anyway.
Like Yaro said, it is nice when it goes up – it’s probably a good thing.

From what I’ve been hearing around, PageRank might not be the thing Google will use to boost your ranking on seach engines later. But I guess we’ll all know later. :)

Congrats on the super boost though.

PageRank works strange for me as well. My old website had a PR of three, and it’s been up for years although I didn’t do any marketing at all.

My new blog, although only a month old, has PR 0, but I’ve done my work and have gotten quite a few links back to it. Very strange?

I was searching for answers about why my PR has dropped and cam accross your blog. My website Bighippo Bathrooms started with a PR of 4 and now its 2. I have been trying to find out how this has happened. One person told me it was possibly due to your recipricol links being not relevant enough, have you heard this? Is it possible for someone to add someone elses site to a link farm? i know this would give any site a black mark.

I have the same question as Grant, for my site http://www.greatvaluegolf.co.uk – I have been trying to raise page rank by adding reciprocal links with generic directories. The site launched in December and has gone from page rank 1 to 0 – any ideas?

i agree, many webmasters love the idea of having the TBPR but this causes confusion as it can show you different results then what your PR really is, i hope google get rid of TBPR but i would say they wouldent as its a great marketing tool for google

I forgot to mention in my post above that when my page rank was 4 i had no recipricol links and as soon as i added some, i slowly watched the PR drop. Now i know the links have to be relevant to your site content, which i thought they were, so i am still confused.
I was told by someone in a SEO company that i probably had one good inbound link from a good page rank site and since the addition of the links page it has degraded my PR.
Well who knows i am still confused on the matter.

It would be nice to have a definitive answer on this pagerank .If you can instantly boost one of your sites to pr6 because you gave it a link from 1 of yours that is a 7 surely this means nothing .It may not have had any visitors and may only have 1 line of text on 1 page .So is pagerank meaningless Well mine no doubt is 0 as I only uploaded this site 1 week ago. http://www.darlokidsfooty heres hoping for traffic

[...] One thing that I don’t like about Google’s PageRank is that often a site can enjoy a particularly high ranking, as high as a PageRank 6, and yet seem to have very little traffic. As I have postulated previously, I believe PageRank can often be raised to a high level thanks to a handful of links from very high PageRank sites. So for example if you own a PageRank 7 or 8 site, you can point a few links to your other sites and give them a PageRank 5 or 6. Hence PageRank doesn’t necessarily indicate traffic popularity, nor is it intended to, but if like me you want to evaluate a site (possibly to buy it), you really need to know the traffic numbers.
