By Loren Nason from Mobile Office Technology
I started a blog – www.mobileofficetech.com. The problem is before I even get traffic I haven’t decided what to make its focus.
The original focus was to be a site that would talk about an e-book I have written (editing it now) and help drive traffic to the e-book. The blog would talk about how to use the technologies in the e-book and the e-book would be for the people that don’t want to sift through the blog to learn how to be mobile. In essence the blog is for the people that don’t want to spend the money, the e-book is for people that are willing to spend a couple bucks to save on time.
While setting up the blog, which I am doing myself and teaching myself CSS, PHP, and WordPress, I wondered maybe if I could also use it to generate more business for Your Local Tech, which is my current business in So Cal, USA. It is a small Concierge Tech Support company focusing on the solo business person and helping them break free from the office and be mobile.
When I heard about Yaro’s call for articles I decided to jump and I sent him an article maybe 45min after he posted the request. In my struggle to explain the purpose of my article, Yaro asked instead I write this article on my struggle of what to do with my blog.
The blog came about from my original business Your Local Tech. Most of my work is for the solo business owner and they want to be mobile. They have seen the technology but what they have been lacking is how to make it actually work for them. The e-book idea came along at the same time for the blog. I thought the e-book might be a good idea if it was priced right and I could use the blog to help promote and to continue the education of how to Be Mobile.
The main reason I want to have a blog and the e-book is to have an income stream that is NOT dependant on my being there. I want the e-book to provide a percentage of my income and maybe if it works I will write more books or “technology guidesâ€Â.
What is the e-book about?
This e-book will not be just technology but will be a guide how to setup your company with technology to allow you to be anywhere you want without sacrificing on company image. The guide is aimed at the solo professional that wants to be mobile but at the same time still portray a professional corporate image.
The struggle is many fold and maybe you can help?
- Is there a market for my e-book?
- There are MANY tech blogs out there, am I wasting my time?
- Should I pimp my e-book or consulting on my blog?
I think I have answered question number 3 from writing this article and that YES I should market my e-book and my consulting biz from the blog. The reason I say yes is look at Yaro’s site and see that he is promoting his other business’s with his blog.
What do you think?

Well, personally, I have never seen a blog dedicated to mobile technology for solo business professionals, and I subscribe to more than 150 blogs (I am also very discriminatory and delete feeds often). There has been some pretty good proof that using a blog to pimp an e-book works. Heck, 37signals just released the number for their ebook, and it turns out they sold almost 20k copies. I would highly suggest reading ProBlogger.net’s post about selling ebooks through blogs.
I think you should definitely start with your ebook, and then pimp your business on the side. This way you establish your expertise, but also build revenue to your ebook.
By the way, if you want to promote your blog, you should enter your blog in the Blog for a Year competition at http://www.blogforayear.com. It’s free to enter and since the competition just started, your blog will get a lot of attention from visitors over the course of the contest.
4 or 5 paragraphs explaining why she is writing that piece of crap…
Yaro, I prefer that you are away for a bit rather than publishing all the crap that people send you… we miss your quality posts
Jose - So harsh! - ever heard that phrase if you don’t have anything positive to say…
I appreciate that you prefer my writing but I think all the guest authors have contributed something from their unique perspectives of value. This post is was a call for help and feedback, it would have been nice if you spent the effort you did to make a comment to provide some advice of a positive and constructive nature.
Thx Eric and Charles for your insight. The article on Problogger.net was a very good read.
Yaro - I agree - so Harsh.
Jose - if your gonna b*tch then have the cojones to use your email instead of anon.
hi your link http://www.mobileofficetech.com in the post when clicked dosen’t work. Just thought you should know.
All fixed - thanks Web Brander.
Loren,
I very much enjoyed your post, and I can relate to your struggle. I hope you will consider keeping us up to date with the decisions you make, as that information could probably help others.
Many times on blogs such as Yaro’s, we get nothing but success stories, and great tips and techniques, but very little back story on how a project began, and what the thought process was behind it. You’ve layed the ground work for a very helpful story.
Let me ask you a few questions, not to be difficult, but because I myself don’t know the answers, and feel the answers are critical to my future success in similar goals to yours.
1. You said you wanted to setup the blog selling the ebook to have an income stream that is not dependent on you working. I have the same goal, but surely keeping a blog going with fresh content is going to be a lot of work. Are you prepared for the amount of work you will have to put in on the blog?
2. I would assume that as your write your ebook, you are going to pack it full of helpful information so the consumer is fully satisfied with your product. If so, I wonder what will be left to continually share on your blog? How much more content will you find on the subject that was not in your blog, and will it be content that is important enough to keep the attention of your readers?
3. This is really an expansion on question 2. How will you convince the reader that you are knowledgeable enough on the topic to be trusted? In order to convince them, will you not have to give away for free, the very information you want to sell?
I wish you the best, and look forward to reading more of your journey.
