It’s been a few months since the last show but I have been itching to do a podcast and Mike Filsaime’s report, The Death of Internet Marketing (aff), stirred a lot of thoughts in my mind, which I decided to brain-dump into a solo podcast episode for all to enjoy.

A warning – this is a serious ramble and I cover a lot of topics (see the show notes below for details) but it’s very current and I suspect if you are at all interested in Internet marketing or online business, as an industry and as a participant, you will enjoy this podcast.

Let me know what you think in the comments!

I don’t understand what you were saying about passion. If someone is passionate about something, yes they might not be a professional, but I don’t think this stops them from converting this into a successful business.

I think if you are passionate about what you are doing, this comes through to your customers, who then reward you through their business.

Not all passions are going to be profitable, but I am sure if most people tried to convert their passion into a business they would be successful at it.

    • 2

I think Passion is key to every business. It shows your customers that you strongly believe in your product, service, or business and it can help to convey your love for it as well. If this is achieved through your passion then you have half the selling of your product or service half won. However, you do have to find an audience that have similar interest in your product or service in order to be successful.

  2. 3

What I am saying, and you may disagree, is that not all passions do convert into a business, or at least a successful business.

Passion in an area where you can use it to market something to a hungry audience works, but if there isn’t an audience willing to buy it doesn’t matter how passionate you are about it – you won’t make money.

    • 4

i would disagree somewhat if you love something and can make a living from it then somemay think thats successful enough as they get to do what they love rather than sit in an office or do a 9 to 5 type job

they get to do what it is they love instead and money might not be the motivator just doing what they love is success to some

I did promote the death of adsense report (which was the original promotion set up in this way) and I did quite well.

But I too did not want to hire my Internet Marketing list to Mike in this way.

  4. 6

It was quite a rant… but a good rant!

  5. 7

I just had this conversation with a relative that wants to develop a niche market that well, really isn’t in any demand. But it is what she loves to do.

My suggestion was to do market research. Find something you can work at and make money and when this money starts rolling in pursue your business you are passionate about as a hobby and not your main source of income. If it works out bonus.

I am going to have to agree with you on this one. Passion alone will not build a business. To find a market that can make some serious profit and your are passionate about is a bonus.

However if you are just passionate about marketing then you can succeed anywhere?

    Hi Yaro,

I just found your blog and I am glad I did. It is very interesting an dthe info is current and useful, i will make it one of my regular stops.

    Keep on!

    Hi,

Some very interesting information here, and a very interesting blog too.

I will have to bookmark this and stop by more often.

    thanks.

But there is a great solution for the passion problem. Do it and move on. You always can learn something. List 20 passions and if they all fail, find 20 more. Check the search numbers until you find a potential hit.

  9. 11

I think passion is one of the most important elements in achieving success. If you do not have any passion about doing any business, you will not be sucessful unless you are very lucky.

  10. 12

Isn’t it amazing what people will do to create exposure…death of internet marketing, blog posting, etc.?

    Sean

  11. 13

I have had this conversation many times with other marketers and people coming on to the internet looking to make a living online. My suggestion is always first start with what you love. Or another way I have surveyed and worded it is…if you could only talk about one thing, or subject for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The reason is, if you are going to have a lasting business online than you will want to develop an Authority site as part of your business model. This requires a site that is going to need alot of original content and a site that is maintained for the long term.

But, it does have to have a market within the topic as well, and a market that is growing is always better…

    Sam

  12. 14

Well, I feel it is not so much of the death of internet marketing, but some internet ventures fail simply because the online business was not set up based on success factors such as based on the wants and needs of the market. It is fine to say there must be passion before you embark on internet marketing, but no amount of passion will be enough if there are no tangible results after say 6 months of trying to work out internet marketing. You simply wither away and shrivel up and die as an internet marketer. I think recognizing marketing trends is also important and to capitalize on those trends.

  13. 15

i’m doing business online since 2001 the way i see it death of marketing i don’t think so every day over 1.5 million new users come online so this trend will never die unless we stop using the internet all together.

  14. 16

I think that internet marketing is stronger than ever. You just have to be smart and creative in how you market.

    Have a profitable day,
    Michael

  15. 17

Internet marketing is stronger than ever in the time of economic downfall.

  16. 18

Internet marketing will never die even though the economy is as bad as it is right now. No matter how bad the economy is smart, hard working people will always be able to make money with internet marketing.

  17. 19

I think recession is a state of mind – don’t join the state of mind and you won’t join the recession! (In terms of online marketing at least :-)

  18. 20

Nice pod cast, I know it’s been a couple of years since you did it, but a lot of that info still holds true today. We still hear people screaming the sky is falling in on IM, but realistically it’s just growing and maturing as an industry. Very few industries have ever just gone away, how ever it’s up to us to stay up on the cutting edge of it all to ensure we’re ready for opportunities yet to come.

  19. 21

Yarik, I read this thread because your blog was recommended to me by someone I admire. I too agree about the “death” of internet marketing. I balk at using the term marketing here. I see online buying behavior more as a matter of influencing and attracting the right type of people to your products or services. Maybe this is just picking the fly sh!t out of the pepper, but going online to “market” is a losing proposition that just creates a bunch of noise. Having something to say is a matter of publishing your thoughts and positioning products as the “next right indicated action” to fill a buyers needs.

  20. 22

thank you very much for the mp3.

  21. 23

Great pod cast, I know it’s been a long time since you did it, but a lot of that info is still very useful. We still hear people screaming the sky is falling in on IM, but realistically it’s just growing and maturing as an industry. Very few industries have ever just gone away, how ever it’s up to us to stay up on the cutting edge of it all to ensure we’re ready for opportunities yet to come.

  22. 24

Well I think more and more people are looking online these days. But also I seen more and more conventional marketing like postcards and newspapers ads etc.
I guess you have to be open to new ideas inorder to expand. Great Blog too!

  23. 25

Regarding Passion, whilst I agree with you, the downside is that passion and the emotion that comes with it can often lead to poor decisions. Please keep up the good work.

  24. 26

Well you sure have passion. i wish i had as much as you do but I am working on it. Motivational stuff. Thank You

  25. 27

Internet marketing will only get bigger and bigger. The number of people turning to the internet to search for goods and services continues to grow, we just have to be more creative and continue to come up with better ideas.

  26. 28

A good rant, but I am afraid that it is here to stay!

  27. 29

Great solution for the passion problem. Do it and move on. You always can learn something. List 20 passions and if they all fail, find 20 more. Check the search numbers until you find a potential hit.

  28. 30

Just stumbled across this via google and despite the age, still seems pretty relevant, although there’s hardly been a death in IM. For me I’m focusing on my passion first – watches – and then moving on from there.

  29. 31

Affiliate marketing is NOT dead in fact I see it as a diamond in the rough. You just have to find what works and that means you need to learn how to fail gracefully and fast so you can move on.

  30. 32

If you do not have any passion about doing any business, you will not be sucessful unless you are very lucky.I think passion is one of the most important elements in achieving success.

  31. 33

hey Yaro just Found This Blog man Good stuff ill be sure to visit it from now on

  32. 34

wow, i am just a newbie in internet marketing.

Have not made any $$ from the internet yet.. trying too..

Well, i was shocked when i read the death of the internet marketing.. huuhuhu, that sounds like no more chance for me to make some money through the internet. But i guess the internet is big, so there is a way.

who is Mike Filsaime? (just asking, sorry if someone feels this comment is a dumb one.) and this is the first time i’ve heard of podcasting.. What does it do actually?

  33. 35

I have been following Mike Filsame and The Butterfly Marketing System for some time now and I have learned a lot from it about internet marketing. Rich Schefren is also someone who you definitely want to study up on if you are looking to become a full-time internet marketer

  34. 36

I have been reading plenty of “guru” missives lately and when you compare one with the other it becomes clear who talks sense and who talks BS.

Where would everyone here put Mike Filsaime?

Ps Like the footer thing! :)

  35. 37

Reminds me of Chang Cha’o : Passion holds up the world, while genius paints the roof. If passion were not to hold the world steady, can genius get around to paint the roof. Whats business without passion and how would a marketing executive paint the roof without passion holding on?

  36. 38

All the market research of the world cannot sell a bad product, with or without passion. And no one can deny a good product for long

  37. 39

Being Passionate about what you are selling sure helps you to create content for your site. But I have found I can be excited about anything that creates me money. So passion for things that you sell is all in the way you look at it .

Creating websites around what you like and making money is marvelous if it is selling.

  38. 41

It was quite a rant… but a good rant!

  39. 42

Being interested in guitars since I was a kid made me real interested in what they have on the internet. I have lots of passion there.

  40. 43

Its now 3 years later and internet marketing is still with bigger launches and more products every month. But from what I see there is nothing much new. Only rehashes with small variations. Maybe there are enough newbies to keep the so called gurus happy.

  41. 44

At times all your passion cannot sell your product and sometimes no passion whatsoever can bring customers in droves! The market can be as capricious as Mother Nature itself

  42. 45

Don’t forget there are more people being born every minute who will be customers and IMs in the future. There is also the small matter of 2 Billion Chinese who also are on;ine and who like making a penny or two :)

  43. 46

You need passion to be able to sell, if you have the passion personally you can sell the worst product on the market!

  44. 47

Same thing happened to me so I just gave up. Then I saw this posting. Still can’t figure out how to get the report.

  45. 48

One can sell a lemon with passion once but can one sustain the sales pitch with lemon in hand.

  46. 49

^ It is just your thoughts that you can only sell a lemon once. If you are truly passionate, motivated and happy with what you’re doing, sustaining an e-commerce site is not a question.

  47. 50

  48. 51

One can sell a lemon with passion once but can one sustain the sales pitch with lemon in hand. very good!!!

  49. 52

At first I was a little confused, but I do understand what Yaro is saying. I think that passion can be looked at a driving force when working towards a profitable business. But if the business is not profitable to begin with then all the passion in the world won’t change that. So you have to have the perfect combination of both passion and profitability.

  50. 53

Rant all the way, but informative and useful rant. Like it.
