I actually just got around to listening to this book on audio, it’s such an amazing work. I had the understanding of the long tail but the book really solidified the questions I had floating around – this stuff is epic!

I think the two best concepts that came out during the 2000-2010 era (the first 10 years of the new century, basically) have been the concept of the long tail and the concept of tipping points – this was a nice article to have re-read about the long tail – thanks for keeping your older posts available still, Yaro!

I use video in Blog Mastermind to teach my students how to make money blogging.

However I don’t teach technical how-tos with video, I tell people to outsource technical things if that is not your strong point, that’s a much smarter practice.

Hi Yaro,
You are obviously very smart and well informed. I understand the concept of long tail— I really need to start an online business. I have been researching about it for the last 3 months and have learned a lot. BUT there are so many different views as to which style of business would actually be more secure to earn something from. After studying SEO for the past month I have to admit my head is spinning and I am very skeptic of ti being possible to make a living on the internet– unless your a techie kind of person. Do you know of a good video course that could teach me the basics on starting an online business using the concept of long tail blogging? Some people say that long tail is not good because google will drop your lontail posts if there’s not a lot of traffic. What do you think? How do we prevent google from dropping those older posts?

Thanks for your comments. Yes I agree there are so many opportunities in niches online that I doubt we will see a saturation point ever, yet I still expect the specialists in each niche will be the only ones to get rich provided there is a large enough market in that niche. Of course “rich” may not be everyone’s goal and I’m sure many niches will support self employed people who will make an average salary type income, which isn’t too bad at all!

Great commentary Yaro. Some people argue that the long tail niches are the way that the small players on the internet will manage to stay in business as the big companies take the over the larger market segments. In addition, some of the dominant concepts on the internet, such a social bookmarking, started out as niches, so there’s always new opportunities for the small players.

Very facinating article. I was very interested in your comments on abubdance/scarcity. I am a student of the spiritual classic A Course In Miracles, which teaches that our natural state in one of abundance, and that it is only our belief in scarcity that prevents us experiencing it. Although it is speaking of a higher spiritual level, it has obvious parallels in our worldly life (the level of illusion in its terms) I keep coming across references to The Secret, and have seen the trailer several times. Wow – long article. Very thorough. I myself am certianly having a lot of success focuses on one small part of what i would call the long tail. There is indeed a lot of money to be made selling products which aren’t necessarily the most popular items.
