I agree that it takes time for a blog to make money. Do what you love and the money will follow is a good saying. However, it takes awhile for the money to follow. Why? It’s because it takes a long time for many people to gain visitors and a good reputation.

The most important thing about blogging is to stop thinking about making money in the first place. People should blog simply because they love to blog. You will post better contents when you stop worrying about the money. Let money be the last thing on the list. Content + Networking > Money

I agree with many of your points and would add that it is almost impossible to start out with a blog from scratch with the aim of making a lot of money. It is far better to begin blogging on a topic that interests you, gain traffic and a following. The money will then follow.

The old rules still apply. Keep it simple stupid! and if you write well, people will read.

Sometimes i feel like giving up on blogging as the traffic coming to my bog is low. But i changed my attitude on blogging and insist that blogging is a form of leisure and not for money… at least i feel more happier

I agree, as well. But to me that just means that we need to use a different model of creating a success blog than what Darren and others like him have done. I know that I have no interest in being a professional blogger, per se. Though I am interested in building a niche in the blogosphere based on my expertise. That just means I have a service to offer instead of making money directly off my blog.

Fantastic post. This is the same argument that I’ve been making about the world of consulting. You can make a living from consulting, but, if you really want to make an enviable income, you need to turn your consulting into a business model.

I’m pleased that I’ve been able to work toward this goal and that I’m now seeing the fruits of my labour. So many people work at something for years without regard for how to create recurring revenue. When I was doing my MBA, my New Ventures prof hammered into my head the need to create recurring revenue. Fortunately, I agreed with him.

Your post has inspired me to write a future post on my site about creating recurring revenue from your consulting business. I’ve been so focused on helping people start consulting businesses that I have overlooked opportunities to help them move their current businesses to the next level.

Yaro, this post is the best of your serie. You described the blogging situation like it is.

Making $money blogging like Darren is really hard. You need to blog at least one year or more to get your blogs getting going and get loyal readership and money.

I also hate working for people… And I don’t do it. I enjoy blogging and rading blogs like yours.

I am not in the professional bloggers categorie although I make money from my blogs.

I drive a fairly amount of traffic to my other sources of income as you described.

Blogs are the fastest way I found to be on the first page of Google for the topics you chose.

When I coach people in affiiate marketing, the first thing I teach is blogging, because they will get visitors in one week, and be motivated to continue.

I am waiting for your next post.

I totally agree Yaro.

I agree that if new bloggers want to go the blog+traffic+advertising model, it’s hard to beat the established probloggers like Darren and make a full-time living out of it.

But the second model you mentioned is still highly viable. If you’re selling your own product or affiliate products, and use blogs merely as a way to generate traffic, it can be done.

Most of my traffic generation methods come from using blogs, but I won’t call myself a problogger is the sense that you mentioned, ie, blogging and adding new posts every day for advertising money.

You don’t necessarily need luck or to be a first mover. You just need to be better and/or more visible. If your product is mediocre and your marketing rocks, then you’ll still get the traffic and dough. Perhaps there are better probloggers than Darren but no one’s really aware of them, are they? (Not saying Darren is mediocre btw, far from it. Just illustrating the point.)
btw, and I say this as a succesful SEO: Google sucks. Relying on it means you’re giving up lots of personal info you might feel uncomfy sharing with other groups, like the government. So if you can get your marketing to work around SEO (for Google anyhow) you’ll be better off.

Excellent series!

I am one of those working full time, blogging in my spare time people that hopes to make money from home in the near future.

Blogging is not the only method (not even the primary one) that I am focusing on, but it is an important one.
