PageRank Update In Progress?

Update: I’ve added a question mark to this post because it appears perhaps the PageRank update is NOT in progress. I thought I saw enough signs - a few of my sites have changed, John Chow’s changed too and a couple of blogs were talking about - but perhaps these are just random events and not indicating a full update is in progress. Apologies if I got your hopes up!

It never ceases to amaze me how much attention the budding webmaster and blogger gives to PageRank (if you are new to PageRank, read this explanation - PageRank Explained - Keeping SEO Simple).

In the last month or so I’ve seen some speculation that PageRank is no longer being updated and Google was abandoning it - or at least no longer updating the public display of PageRank on web pages. Given their now famous stance against text link buying to improve search results, it made sense that PageRank could be changed or simply left static, never to update again.

Word on the street is that the latest PageRank update is now occurring, so here we are again, all eagerly awaiting to see what happens to our sites. The speculation of PageRank’s demise will have to wait for another few months or until Google actually says something about it.

In recent times with the advent of services to make money from blogs like Text Link Ads and when selling advertising directly to sponsors, a site’s PageRank plays an important part (along with AlexaRank).

PageRank and AlexaRank are known for being terrible tools to accurately assess a website’s popularity, yet many third party advertising brokering services that bloggers and site owners depend on for a big chunk of their livelihood, rely on these tools for assessing how much money to charge for advertising.

Nothing I do is directly related to increasing my PageRank, but like most Webmasters, I love to see mine increase. I realize that simply because of the act of blogging and marketing a website, you naturally do good things for your PageRank, but the focus is not on whether the little green bar increases or not. You don’t judge your performance on PageRank, it’s just an added benefit.

Like many webmasters, I always look at the PageRank of sites and it definitely impacts my opinion of them. I don’t think it’s an accurate measure, but it gets attention, and in today’s ad driven world wide web - that matters.

So what PageRank score are you expecting after this update?

Hi Yaro,

I’ve always been curious with Google’s Page Rank system. I’ve been doing my best to provide great content on my blog.

I’m hoping that the new page rank update, I get a page rank 3 or 4.

Cheeers,
Carlo Selorio

I have make the habit of valuing a webpage by its PR too. With Google toolbar its hard not to.

PR is misleading because I’ve seen a number of poor quality sites with high page rank. Just because you have sites linking to you doesnt make you an authority. It’s a quid pro quo if you ask me.

Yeah… I measure also the quality of website by its Google PR. Google will update it, It means that Google is trying to provide quality content sites with more exposure, and by using their page ranking system, only the sites with relevant, quality content will be considered in both the search results and the link exchange calculations.

I’m expecting the same, 4/10. Haven’t built up enough links to move up yet and same with the content.

PR should be considered as just that, the other meaning of PR. The only organization helped by that little green bar is Google, as it helps keep us web marketeers inanely focused on one fairly irrelevant factor.

I would love to receive a 5 on the update (that’s what iwebtool predicts) but who knows? I know those tools are really just about as useless as PageRank itself, but like others, I’m just as eager to see what I get and hopefully finally see some page rank when I visit my site rather than a big fat buzz kill zero. :)

Hi Yaro! Are you sure there’s an export going on? I can’t see any of the usual changes that happen during an update. I was suspicious because John Chow dropped to a PR5, but I’m wondering now if that was a manual update.

I’m not sure! Have you seen any other changes?

I have seen people buy expired domains with PageRank 6 slap some content on the domain add a few links and the domainstill has PageRank 6 a year later. Eventhough the new content is not at all related to the content that was on the domain before it expired.

What does that tell us about PageRank!

I am not really sure of that one. My alexa ranking has been steadily increasing over the lasted month, but I also got John Chowed for my own name.
I think mine will stay the same this time around. I want to hit a four next time though.
But either way I am not here to watch numbers go up and down, except for maybe my real stats.

It is really hard not to look at the page rank of the site you are visiting. My site is currently PR2 and I am expecting for an increase since I have been very busy trying to improve my site but my blog is new so, I am not expecting much but it would nice to have PR0 rather than have N/A.

It is really sad that people judge the site base on their PR and not on their contents, there are a lot of useless sites that bears high PR and there are also a lot good quality sites that bears little PR or no PR at all.

There has been so many backlink updates recently that my opinion is that Google is undergoing a major cleanup in their databases. These frequent updates started end og july 2007. That’s when the pagerank update was expected. Something big is boiling. Be patient.

It has also become a habit of me to predict the quality of the site PR, and I have SearchStatus Firefox plugin installed. But I know that some low quality websites are also given high PR. how does this happen ? I’ve seen websites of PR5 and PR6 and they re nowhere to be found on Google. If Google don’t give them ranking and why do give higher PR, if PR and rankings are whole different things ? I also have Compete bar on my SearchStatus, it displays how many US visitors a website gets from US, and it is also helpful in predicting the quality.
