WordPress Announces New Plug-ins

WordPress LogoWordPress announced a new crop of plug-ins today. Nothing mind-blowing, but some pretty nifty toys that you might find useful. Check ‘em out!

  1. Auto-Scroller makes it possible to scroll the posts easily and rapidly, with a click.
  2. Intelligent Content Ad Insertion lets you insert advertisements in post, page and feed content without having to manually adjust the code of your theme, or RSS feed.
  3. Skin Tags allows a tag to break across the column, creating a more del.icio.us-style tag cloud.
  4. TechTags adds a single line to a post or page to display Technorati tags. Great for those tag-heads out there.
  5. WP-Offline lets your readers cache your entire blog for offline reading using Google Gears. I don’t know why anyone would want to cache an entire blog to read it offline… but it’s available.

    Hey, Yaro, everyone.

Been reading you (and listening to your podcasts) for a couple of weeks now. Great stuff. Liked it so much that it was one of the reasons I finally decided to start my own blog.

Question about Wordpress plug-ins. I am far from tech-savvy when it comes to code and spent 2 hours today using filezilla to try and add a plug in to my blog but it couldn’t connect (and 2 hours yesterday trying to upload a favicon, but that’s another story.)

It made me wonder if I am even allowed to do it for my free blog hosted by Wordpress. Do I have to have my site hosted by someone else in order to use plugin? Or pay for the right to use them?

    Thanks

    Chris

    Chris,

It seems that you are not allowed to use plugins on your Wordpress.com free blog. Please see the following thread by Lorelle who is an experienced WP user. I believe she is involved in WP

You can buy your own hosting and install wordpress.org themes on their. This will allow you to do whatever you wish as you would own the domain and the blog. Whatever you do, don’t buy your domain and hosting at the same place!
I suggest GoDaddy.com for domain names and
    Hostgator.com for hosting

    Hope this helps

Paulo – if your host has Cpanel and Fantastico, then installing a blog on a sub domain http://www.yourdomain.com/blog would be a breeze.

    Take care
    Monika

Hi Yaro, thanks for the list of plug-ins. I’ve just started a new blog and your tips have been useful. Can you share what exact plug-ins do you use for:
    - Top articles / popular articles
    - Tags (I’m currently using ‘Simple Tags’ but the tags don’t show below my posts, are you using something else?)
    - Related article
    - Subscribe to comments

    Thanks Yaro, appreciate your feedback.
    Cheers,
    Sant

Thanks, Monika! Shocked the heck out of me that Wordpress.com and .org are like different species. Would explain why I couldn’t make it work.

And the other poster was right: I should have started at Wordpress…

    Thanks to both of you.

To those who asked… I don’t believe that you can do much editing to the free Wordpress blogs. You either have to pay for the premium service (they host your blog) or get your own domain.

Sant – The plugins you asked for are as follows… Just do a search for them in the wordpress plugins database.

    -Popularity Contest
    -Ultimate Tag Warrior
    -Sphere: Related Content
    -Subscribe to Comments

Bryan, the “Sphere: Related Content” plugin seems to show only other articles from Sphere. I’m looking for a plugin to show related articles/posts within my own blog, that will show below a posts. Like the one being used at entrepreneur’s-journey.

Also, I’ve been trying to find the “My MSN +” chicklet but so far no luck. I don’t seem to find it in Feedburner. Can I get it somewhere else?

One last question that might be off topic, does BlogMastermind cover technical stuffs like which plugin to use, how to configure them, etc?

Thank you very much Bryan. You’ve been very helpful.

Yeah, I don’t think I would want this anyways because let’s say I had ads or wanted people to link to my site, etc. If it was offline, it would be a lot harder for the user to do any of these things.

They just keep coming up with new plugins for wordpress. I thought the wp offline was interesting. I guess it would make sense for someone who really wants to read a blog, but is about to get on an airplane, or some other time when they would not have an available internet. Good stuff Yaro.
