I tried to develop sites with Joomla but found the performance a bit sluggish to my taste. Too many “bells and whistles” that I didn’t need and it was hard to get rid of them.
Wordpress is lot more lightweight and flexible and to my experience is faster.
Wordpress is exceptionally good for search engine optimization (SEO).
With a little configuration – each of your page/post could get indexed by Google super fast, sometimes within 15-20 minutes.

Regarding membership site software – try ‘memberwing’ – plugin for WordPress. It build with strong SEO features by itself – which allows your membership site to be indexed and ranked by search engines while keeping your premium content protected.
Memberwing also very simple – upload, activate, insert “premium marker” inside your post or page: {+++} – and everything after it will be protected and available only to premium (paid if you wish) members.
Done.

I’d suggest to stay away from software that ‘locks’ away the whole “membership” area of your site. This would mean no indexing by search engines, and no organic rankings. You’ll be left spending cash on advertising to attract new members.

Won’t Joomla do a better job since it seems to be more robust. A friend of mine suggest that Joomla is better equipped than wordpress for membership sites.

$1500 to create a membership site. Yikes. There are so many amazing themes for wordpress you can cut out a designer.
I used a free theme and wp-member plugin i got from wp-member.com for €19.99.
There are so many places selling “how to” guides, it’s insane.

I have a membership site for martial arts school owners that is doing OK. I’m considering a new site, LearnMartialArtsOnline.com that will provide lessons from a wide variety of experts. With the huge supply of how to videos online, I’m wondering if this would work better as a free, ad driven site or a $9.95 per month membership site. Any suggestions or resources you guys can point me towards would be great.

About an hour ago I had a great idea for a membership site. I would usually use Joomla for this type of site. It’s usually a better bet than WordPress when you need anything more than a blog or a brochure site.

Needless to say, I’m pleasantly surprised to find a bolt-on product like this. I think it’ll be a raging success.

So I’m sorry Joomla, it looks like I’ve just found my answer in a tweaked WordPress install.

WordPress plus PayBOX plugin and you can have all the functionality you need Assuming your host supports Fantastico WordPress install all you need outside of it is OneClickInstall plugin to NEVER have to use FTP …

Yaro, thanks for the informative and honest review! This is great information to me. Frankly, i didn’t know we could do membership site with WordPress as well! Well, I tried setting up a blog on WP recently and I still have not come to terms with its functionality and usability. So, I’m not sure if I’m able to comprehend using this product yet. Anyhow, membership site is definitely something I’m interested to do in the near future. However, the key is how to churn out value-added content month after month?

Thanks for the detailed review, i really like your honesty. While membership sites seem like a great way to make money, you really need something very special to keep your members happy. I recently spent $97 on a similar product, which I wont mention but it has something to do with the number 12 and an ex con, and to be honest was pretty much a waste of money.

I agree, very detailed post. To Blaine’s point, I would definitely recommend WordPress.

I’ve only been blogging for just over 3 months now and I’ve had almost 10,000 visits. It’s about time to do something about that and I welcome any and all suggestions.

A membership site makes good sense. One thing I feel the need to know more about before I run a membership site though is can I deliver enough good, helpful, excellent content on a continuous basis. Might just have to go for it. Where do you get your super confidence from to go for it with things like this? How much of it is mindset?

I am in the process of setting up a membership site that I want to launch in January, and I am trying to decide between WordPress (which I am familiar with) and Joomla (which I’m not but certainly gives me more options) – either way, I’m planning on using aMember and my own merchant account so this might not necessarily be worth it for me. It is cheap though, so maybe I’ll look into picking it up at some point just for reference.

Hey Yaro, I reckon your series on membership sites is pretty damn good. I understand about the WordPress issues in this product but I recently paid over $25 for PayBOX to do the same job. I feel a little let down because they still do not have the tutorials set up yet, but I am assured by Sergios they are on their way.

Wow Yaro…Very impressed with your detailed review of the product. I love the way you have given the product a score…But the best part is your analysis of the negatives…Shows your impartial. I don’t have a membership site but I recently converted my whole site to a wordpress theme. I was very impressed at how easy the whole thing was.

The idea of creating membership sites really interests me at the moment but I had no idea it could be done with WordPress! If I hadn’t recently joined Teaching Sells then I would probably buy this. Sounds pretty cheap at $20. Maybe he’s planning to reveal the content management etc in a separate product heh

I’m running my own membership website before I know wordpress. It was a pain trying to edit every content, date, time and others using editor. With wordpress the work will be lighten about 80%.

Potential ROI (return on investment): 10/10
