How To Build A Profitable Email List - Frank Kern Style

I want to show you something. It’s a check (or cheque if you come from where I live). It’s by no means the largest check in the world, but so far for me, it’s the largest one time affiliate commission check I’ve made.

Here it is:

$4,000 Affiliate Commission Check

This check is for $4,314.34 USD. I made this money by writing one blog post and one email. That’s it.

In fact, this check is only part of the money because some of the income was paid in split payments, so I still have more to come. In total, that one blog post and email generated over $6,000 in commissions.

I’s not a six figure check or even a five figure check, but remember this is from just one blog post and one email. It’s not my entire blog income for the month, nor is it money from Pay Per Click advertising selling CPA promotions or money made from membership sites or anything else.

Just one blog post and one email. Imagine if every blog post and email you wrote was worth that much!

Best of all, this money came from selling an affiliate product so I didn’t have to deliver anything after making the sales, just deposit the money and done.

How Can You Generate Checks Like This?

Let’s spare the hype, obviously you can’t expect to earn that kind of money from every blog post you write or email you send to your list. That’s obvious.

The reason I made this much money is because of one thing - my email list.

If you break that down further, my email list is a result of long term nurturing and only began in the first place because I blog. That’s all there is to it.

The money is in the list. It’s been said over and over again and yes, it is true, the money is in the list, yet so many bloggers don’t get this.

As a blogger, this is not something we inherently understand because we put faith in RSS feeds. Only the bloggers who are Internet marketers too use their blog to build their email list and understand that the list is the lifeblood of their business.

Sure, a few high profiled bloggers with solid RSS readerships can make their blog do what a good email list can do, but in my experience, it’s WAY easier to build a profitable list than it is a huge RSS readership. If you’re smart, you can use one to build the other.

Before you go about building an email list, you need to understand what goes into making one profitable. My list took a LONG time to make any money and it was entirely my fault. It paid off in the end and now I receive regular checks like in this post, but with a little training and smarter choices early on, I could have made money a lot sooner.

Marketing As Part Of The Crowd

You’ve probably seen the videos and emails flying around for the next launch, this time for Frank Kern’s Mass Control System.

Frank is one of my favorite Internet marketers because he’s so brutally normal - or at least very good at portraying himself as “one of us”. His email copy is brilliant - he’s definitely a person to model when it comes to copywriting for emails.

He sends out videos that are just him sitting in front of the camera recording power point slide presentations with typos and mistakes, yet that only serves to make his presentation more compelling - if this guy can make millions online, then anyone can!

Of course, that’s all part of his system and sure Frank is being honest and presenting himself as he truly is - totally human - but he is also very strategic about the process. That’s what his Mass Control System is all about, using different media to market with and present yourself as just like everyone else - a friend.

I for one love everything Frank talks about because I use a similar style. It’s relaxed and casual and just me talking or writing or recording camtasia videos. That’s the beautiful thing about today’s Internet marketing landscape - being yourself works in your favor and can make you big profits if you are strategic about it.

If you have ever felt nervous about promoting your products using your name, voice or face, then Frank’s style should convince you that anyone can do it. It’s worth studying how Frank does what he does just so you can replicate him in your own promotions.

Frank Kern’s Tips on Email List Building

Now back to my original point - how you can build a profitable email list.

Frank has gone and released a series of videos on how he builds email lists and what it takes to build a profitable one.

Here’s a link to the first free video:

Frank’s three key criteria for profitable lists are quite simple and you probably know this already:

  • Focus on a markets where people buy stuff
  • People have to actually want what you sell
  • You have to provide value too

Frank goes on to explain that you can make good money from even small lists and he shows you how. He actually sold out of a $10,000 a head seminar with a list of only 7,236 subscribers netting over a million dollars. The reason he could make this happen is nothing special - he had a quality list. That’s the exact justification he gives in the video too. Quality wins out over quantity yet again.

If you watch the rest of the video and then opt-in to receive the other videos in the series you will get a fantastic idea of how you can build a profitable list. It’s worth watching just to see Frank ply his craft.

It’s free too by the way, so there’s no reason not to. Here’s that link again…

Well Yaro today was the day I made my very first affiliate income. Just $65, but to me it was $65,000, because ever since I started on your BlogMastermind 6 months ago I knew this day would come, and it has. Yippeee!

Congrats John - my first affiliate sale was for $15, so you are ahead of the curve! If you keep doing what you are doing, a year from now I’d say you should have at least a four figure affiliate total.

    Hey Yaro,

very inspiring post, and also great to see that you’re a ‘follower’ of Frank Kern.

Zecca - email marketing isn’t about spam. It’s far from that. But some bad guys mess it up sometimes. That’s how email marketing got a bad name, ignorance and greed.

    Congrats, Yaro. Inspiring post.

One question: For new bloggers, if we are to choose building a base of RSS readers, or to build a mailing list, which one would you advice us to go for? By default I promote RSS, but I realised that the content I send out is not focused due to the nature of how most people blog.

But at the same time, if you are to have a list, you need the extra effort to write the email newsletter. I am on your mailing list, and it amazes me you can write on your blog AND on your email list so quickly.

So, if you have to choose one over the other for a starter blog… what would it be?

So true about lists, but it’s a dangerous line when doing this and losing subscribers. In a way you are selling out their information to others, no?

On January 18, 2008 at 4:25 pm Yaro said:

@Razlan - If possible I would do both. Your email list should be a bit more focused - or at least the offer you present to get people to subscribe is.

However if you are struggling just to build a popular blog, forget the newsletter for a while and just become a great blogger, which should naturally increase your RSS readership.

Another option is to set up a PDF report or an e-course of 5 emails to get people on to the list and then just broadcast to it when you can. That way you don’t have to create too much content beyond the resource you offer to first capture the email.

Remember my emails on my traffic tips list were created over 18 months - over 50 of them - and they keep going out from the start to the finish so I’m not producing fresh content for the list all the time, I can function off my previous efforts.

@voipblogger - You are in a way, but selling out is too harsh a phrase. After every mail out you lose some subscribers. It happens no matter what, whether you promote someone else’s products or just write a really helpful email.

One thing to think about though is when you promote and help someone make sales, they feel indebted to do the same for you - the law of reciprocity kicks in. This is how you can build your own list, give before asking to receive.

    Hi Yaro! :-)
I read your article, but I still don’t understand how to build an email list: how can I collect email addresses? I have only 20-30 RSS subscribers, so my email list could have only 20-30 items. In addition to this, I must say that many RSS subscribers didn’t ask to receive emails from me, so I can’t send spam to them.

Could you explain your strategy about this topic, please? Thanks in advance.
