The day after I arrived in Vegas I got an email from Tim Kerber, the guy in charge of Membership Site Bootcamp, a training program for people who want to profit by creating their own online membership site.
Tim was super nice to me. He gave me his cell phone number via email and asked if I wanted to meet up early before the official mastermind the next day. I had plans to go see Cirque Du Soleil that night, so I had to give him a raincheck.
The next day, Tim was one of the first guys to come up and say hello at Jeff Walker’s mastermind meet-up and to be honest, besides knowing his name from the very successful Membership Site Bootcamp launch from 2007 (1.7 Million in sales), I didn’t know much about him.
It turns out Tim is a regular reader of my blog. I chatted with him for a good half hour at the networking event and I was impressed by how down to earth and friendly he is.
My Favorite Business Model – Membership Sites
It’s no secret that I have made a big chunk of my living from Blog Mastermind, my first membership site. I made over $100,000 from this one site in the past year alone.
The money is obviously great, but what I’m most happy about is how the steady income proves that my members receive so much value that they choose to stay a member of my program for the long term. This is very satisfying intrinsically, as well as financially.
Membership sites are a solid business model because you foster an ongoing relationship with your clients. The recursive income is obviously a motivation, but as anyone who runs a membership site understands, the money is a result of delivering ongoing value, it’s not a one-hit-wonder style product where you make your money and then walk away.
I’m not a fan of releasing one product after another, going from launch to launch. Creating and marketing products is a lot of work, so I prefer to have flagship products that you invest in over time and improve to the point that you have a superior position in your marketplace. If you focus your energy on just your membership site, it can become the basis for an entire six, or even seven figure business.
Membership Site Training From Tim Kerber
This week Membership Site Bootcamp reopens again for only the second time.
Tim’s currently in prelaunch mode for his flagship training program and as usual, that means there are free videos and other educational materials flying around the Internet marketing community. This is a great opportunity to grab some training on what is definitely the best online business model I know of so you can learn how to start your own membership site.
You can check out Tim’s latest video here –
Membership Site Bootcamp Video
This first video shows the outcome of some of Tim’s recent student’s successes launching membership sites.
Some of the numbers Tim shows from his previous students are impressive, but don’t let that daunt you. I aimed for 50 members when I first launched my site because I figured even 50 members times $50 a month is a great starting income of $2,500 a month. I ended up with 300 after the launch week, which obviously was a great result and fully convinced me of the viability of the membership site model.
Put it another way – if you can attract just one member a week, that’s 52 members a year and even with a 10% dropout rate, you are still making good money. Chances are your site will grow quicker, so you won’t stay at one new member a week for long.
If you have an idea for a course or a subscription service or any kind of membership site, it’s worth checking out what Tim is doing. Take a look at the free 8 minute long Membership Site Bootcamp video and if you like what you see, opt-in to grab the rest of the free videos.

Hmm, this reasoning sounds very, very appealing.
I do have ideas for membership-based services. I just lack the necessary knowledge to put said ideas in practice. I tried to visit Tim’s site but it didn’t load here. Well, it must be just my connection. I’ll try again later.
Thank you for sharing the link, Yaro.
Hi Yaro,
I am a frequent reader of your blog. You are giving out really good information and I was espcially caught by the video about the membership site hence I was planning to do that for a long time. Keep up your good work.
Greetings from Germany, Ben
Yaro,
I’m interested in establishing membership sites, and I’ve been wondering myself for long on how to set a membership site up and running.
Content is crucial, but how to get a membership site up and running is paramount.
I’ve watched the video and sign up with them – I’ll update what I’ll find out with them in this post
Cheers!
It would be nice to propose those courses online. I live in Europe and have big interest in such courses.
Greetz,
Laura
Earning from membership site once you have a popular blog is really a great option and sounds like a great business model.
I don’t see many ways to succeed without being established online before that though. People who sell products teaching others how to make membership sites claim that there are many easy methods, but after being in such a site I can say from personal experience that nothing easy and quick works. I still think the membership model is one of the best, but one should get prepared for a really hard work.
hmm trying to post again – comment didn’t go through
sorry about this yaro – my 1st comment didn’t go through (it may be due to a link in the post, so I have put ‘DOT’ com instead, and trying again, and please excuse ‘test’ post above. Trying again ….
Hi Yaro
Thanks for this post. Memberships are certainly the way to go and I hope to get into your blog mastermind school when next open. I have sooo many membership plans, but must start at one because need that focus or won’t get any of them up and running! And really want to get my blogging self hosted and more professional to launch some of my projects/memberships down the track
So – the link to the videos is great, thankyou – signing up.
** Just as an aside – more social media tools for your blog?
I was wondering if you could put the ‘twit this’ wp plugin on your blog?? Because I would love to instantly add some of your posts to my twitter-tweets stream for others to see – although many are probably already following you already
Here is a link to a site, with lots of social media tools, inclouding wp plugins, which you may (or may not) know of – you may already be following this person – the websuccessdiva (social media expert) – some great tools and posts – here is the one with the social media wp plugins and other tools (incl twit this and commentluv – see below).
http://websuccessdiva DOT com/2008/06/24/use-social-media-tools-to-put-the-social-back-in-social-media/
I have also moved to the Flock Social Media Web browser (based on mozilla) – its great and can more easily and efficiently do the ’social media’ networking (learned via the 30daymarketingChallenge – lots about social media too, but again, you probably already know about this one too!
People will also ‘luv’ you if you put the ‘CommentLuv’ plugin too! people comment and they get an automatic link back to their last blog post as yu probably know?
Again, this is just an aside! But want to spread the word about your site even more because of its value (plus, the more value and tips I can offer to my fellow tweeters, the better for me too of course! hehe
– so, would be great to instantly tweet some of your posts, including this one about membersites and the free vids
Kind Regards and congrats on your membersite – this is certainly inspiring!

PS I love the new design of your blog. Who did it if you don’t mind me asking, as I am soon to be outsourcing blog design and moving away from blogger. I do have one in mind so far – Design Farmer, who designed Caroline Middlebrook’s blog.
Yaro, each of the past few times I’ve visited the site, I’ve found this blog promoting some program or another that will teach people how to get traffic/make more money online. As a friend, and someone who used to read you literally every night – staying up waaaaay into the early hours of the morning to also get at your archival material – I have to say that this really makes the site boring. And while I personally owe you a debt of gratitude for helping me learn about SEO and get me into search marketing, so I feel that you are credibile, others have said that this frequent affiliate promotion feels like lame shilling to them. You may be earning a few commissions now and again – big ones even – but what is it doing to your brand long term?
Please don’t take this personally, as I’m writing it as a friend offering constructive criticism.
p.s. The video is a bait and switch – they talk about who they are and their secrets to making lots of money – but don’t give any really valuable content away in the video.
Hey Gab,
Long time no comment – welcome back.
I have to be honest with you, I get frustrated with comments like yours.
If you look past the previous 5 or so articles on this blog you will see an entire series devoted to good customer service, a series of posts that took me days to write (one of the articles was 5000+ words). After that you get articles about my trip to Vegas, including video content that takes me a while to record and edit. Many people say they really enjoy my traveling posts.
I wonder whether you are reacting to this post because you don’t agree with the marketing methods that Tim is using and you don’t want to see my blog promote him? I can understand that, but please don’t say that every time you come here you see promotional posts because it’s not true unless you read posts like this one in isolation without viewing the rest of the recent content.
However as always, if you don’t like my content please don’t read my blog.
Yaro
Hey Yaro,
In fairness to you, I haven’t had a thorough look at your content, and should have done so before writing that comment. In fairness to me, there are a lot of gurus promoted here, the common thread being they’ll teach you how to make money with xyz tactic. It gets repetitive, you know?
As to the marketing methods, I’ve learned to get past that. Aaron Wall’s wonderful SEO Book used to have a spammy looking long sales page. When I finally overcame my aversion and bought the book, I learned a bunch. So no, I’m not reacting to Tim’s methods.
Finally, I’m curious what your take is on the effect on your brand.
Cheers
Gab
Hmmmnnn I love this. I’m going to grab those materials and go through them. I enjoy teaching, but I understand I am not set yet to start a membership site. I still need to understand some things and get my knowledge right about certain issues so that I don’t give half-baked bread to my would be subscribers.
Thanks for sharing this tips and the links to the resources. Regards.
I like your reasoning. I have considered doing this before, but I guess I had a negative mindset and decided it would not be worth it. But getting 50 people like you said is quite feasible when you really think about it, even for those who don’t have so much experience.
Remember it is less expensive to keep a customer than it is to obtain a new one. As a person with an extensive background in business education this customer model is very advantagious for businesses. However, remember also that for people to become enthusiastic and market your product for you your content must add value for them.
Thanks Yaro, great material. I will keep reading.
Trying to post this a second time, first one didnt come through:
We have a “membership” program for our software where companies pay every month to use our software. That gives them the possibility to cancel the usage every month and it gives me the advantage that they pay much more in the long run compared to buying.
And it is good to have a regular income that makes it much easier to calculate the business.
The same principle of membership could of course be applied to offline business like delivering dog food.
This is the second time in as many days that a membership site course has come my way – maybe someone’s trying to tell me something.
if only it were as simple to get and keep members!
