Hey Yaro,

In fairness to you, I haven't had a thorough look at your content, and should have done so before writing that comment. In fairness to me, there are a lot of gurus promoted here, the common thread being they'll teach you how to make money with xyz tactic. It gets repetitive, you know?

As to the marketing methods, I've learned to get past that. Aaron Wall's wonderful SEO Book used to have a spammy looking long sales page. When I finally overcame my aversion and bought the book, I learned a bunch. So no, I'm not reacting to Tim's methods.

Finally, I'm curious what your take is on the effect on your brand.

Cheers

Trying to post this a second time, first one didnt come through:

We have a "membership" program for our software where companies pay every month to use our software. That gives them the possibility to cancel the usage every month and it gives me the advantage that they pay much more in the long run compared to buying.
And it is good to have a regular income that makes it much easier to calculate the business.
The same principle of membership could of course be applied to offline business like delivering dog food.

Remember it is less expensive to keep a customer than it is to obtain a new one. As a person with an extensive background in business education this customer model is very advantagious for businesses. However, remember also that for people to become enthusiastic and market your product for you your content must add value for them.

Thanks Yaro, great material. I will keep reading.

I like your reasoning. I have considered doing this before, but I guess I had a negative mindset and decided it would not be worth it. But getting 50 people like you said is quite feasible when you really think about it, even for those who don't have so much experience.

Hey Gab,

Long time no comment - welcome back.

I have to be honest with you, I get frustrated with comments like yours.

If you look past the previous 5 or so articles on this blog you will see an entire series devoted to good customer service, a series of posts that took me days to write (one of the articles was 5000+ words). After that you get articles about my trip to Vegas, including video content that takes me a while to record and edit. Many people say they really enjoy my traveling posts.

I wonder whether you are reacting to this post because you don't agree with the marketing methods that Tim is using and you don't want to see my blog promote him? I can understand that, but please don't say that every time you come here you see promotional posts because it's not true unless you read posts like this one in isolation without viewing the rest of the recent content.

However as always, if you don't like my content please don't read my blog.

Hmmmnnn I love this. I'm going to grab those materials and go through them. I enjoy teaching, but I understand I am not set yet to start a membership site. I still need to understand some things and get my knowledge right about certain issues so that I don't give half-baked bread to my would be subscribers.
Thanks for sharing this tips and the links to the resources. Regards.

Yaro, each of the past few times I've visited the site, I've found this blog promoting some program or another that will teach people how to get traffic/make more money online. As a friend, and someone who used to read you literally every night - staying up waaaaay into the early hours of the morning to also get at your archival material - I have to say that this really makes the site boring. And while I personally owe you a debt of gratitude for helping me learn about SEO and get me into search marketing, so I feel that you are credibile, others have said that this frequent affiliate promotion feels like lame shilling to them. You may be earning a few commissions now and again - big ones even - but what is it doing to your brand long term?

Please don't take this personally, as I'm writing it as a friend offering constructive criticism.

p.s. The video is a bait and switch - they talk about who they are and their secrets to making lots of money - but don't give any really valuable content away in the video.

sorry about this yaro - my 1st comment didn't go through (it may be due to a link in the post, so I have put 'DOT' com instead, and trying again, and please excuse 'test' post above. Trying again ....

Hi Yaro

Thanks for this post. Memberships are certainly the way to go and I hope to get into your blog mastermind school when next open. I have sooo many membership plans, but must start at one because need that focus or won't get any of them up and running! And really want to get my blogging self hosted and more professional to launch some of my projects/memberships down the track :-)

So - the link to the videos is great, thankyou - signing up.

** Just as an aside - more social media tools for your blog?

I was wondering if you could put the 'twit this' wp plugin on your blog?? Because I would love to instantly add some of your posts to my twitter-tweets stream for others to see - although many are probably already following you already :-)

Here is a link to a site, with lots of social media tools, inclouding wp plugins, which you may (or may not) know of - you may already be following this person - the websuccessdiva (social media expert) - some great tools and posts - here is the one with the social media wp plugins and other tools (incl twit this and commentluv - see below).

http://websuccessdiva DOT com/2008/06/24/use-social-media-tools-to-put-the-social-back-in-social-media/

I have also moved to the Flock Social Media Web browser (based on mozilla) - its great and can more easily and efficiently do the 'social media' networking (learned via the 30daymarketingChallenge - lots about social media too, but again, you probably already know about this one too! :-)

People will also 'luv' you if you put the 'CommentLuv' plugin too! people comment and they get an automatic link back to their last blog post as yu probably know?

Again, this is just an aside! But want to spread the word about your site even more because of its value (plus, the more value and tips I can offer to my fellow tweeters, the better for me too of course! hehe

- so, would be great to instantly tweet some of your posts, including this one about membersites and the free vids :-)

Kind Regards and congrats on your membersite - this is certainly inspiring!

PS I love the new design of your blog. Who did it if you don't mind me asking, as I am soon to be outsourcing blog design and moving away from blogger. I do have one in mind so far - Design Farmer, who designed Caroline Middlebrook's blog.
