How To Travel, Grow a Business AND Take Your Family With You

Continuing the theme started with my previous article on 7 Pitfalls To Prepare For When Traveling With Your Business, Kathryn Alice has written a guest article that explains how she, with her husband and kids, manage to travel with their business and as a result, lower their overheads.

Kathryn with her husband Jon offer a guide called The Portable Lifestyle, which explains how they travel the world with their kids and run a business, which is so the rage these days ;-) . Thanks to Kathryn for sharing her experience with us in this article.

The Portable Lifestyle

Working by the beachMost people can literally live anywhere or run their business while traveling, but very few have realized it. If there ever were a time to consider doing this, it would be now, when the economy has been wobbly. Working where costs are lower is a great belt-tightening move, and what a great way to turn lemons into lemonade!

My husband and I are one year into a world trip that has so far included Hawaii, the South Pacific, Australia, Southeast Asia and Africa. Cancun and Belize are next. We run our business as we go - over the internet - and make money virtually. Every month that we’ve been away, our sales have gone up.

An Example of Life on the Road with The Portable Lifestyle

Our stay on a small tropical island in Indonesia, which lasted for a few months, is a prime example of how you can travel with your business.

7 Pitfalls To Prepare For When Traveling With Your Business

Traveling Pants and SuitcaseAs many of you know I’ve been traveling for most of 2008, having left my home in Brisbane Australia back in April. As I type this I’m on the European leg of a worldwide journey, sitting in an apartment in Amsterdam.

My European travels have really highlighted some of the unique challenges you face when attempting to run a business and enjoy yourself no matter where you are in the world. The reason why it has been especially unique in Europe is because of how much moving around I am doing. Literally each week I am in a different city, which makes for fun times, but also means I am in a constantly changing environment.

As a result of my experiences I’ve learned quite a lot about traveling with an Internet business, some of which I’d like to share with you now.

Here are seven things you should consider if you decide to travel with your business…

New York Videos - Alex Interview, Central Park, US Open Tennis and Ice Cream Sandwiches

Although my New York City visit ended several weeks ago I still had some footage I wanted to get up for you, so here are the final two videos from my awesome time in the Big Apple.

This first video features a two minute interview with Alex from Guruofsales.com, who is a huge fan of my blog - so much so that he tracked me down while I was in New York, coming into Manhattan from Jersey by subway.

The video also includes exploring the markets and by far the highlight of my trip to NY - the ice cream sandwich from heaven.

The second video features a trip to Central Park, some brief footage on a tour bus over to Brooklyn with great views of the bridge at sunset, inside the world’s largest Toys R’ Us with me getting a little too excited about Lego, my day at the US Open tennis and ends with a look at the Statue of Liberty from Battery Park.

New York, well at least Manhattan where I spent my time, is an amazing place. I barely did half of what I wanted to in the week I had there. You could spend the entire week in just the museum of natural history or Soho of any of the cool little villages and hotspots. It’s definitely a city I recommend you visit if you get the chance. I’d like to live there some day myself for a few months in a row to really experience what being a New Yorker is like.

In case you are curious, we rented an apartment in the Upper West side for a week, which cost a total of $1755 USD, definitely the most expensive apartment I’ve rented so far on my travels, but for New York I wanted to splurge a little. It turned out to be in a great location, although for the price I was disappointed with the interior and the Internet wasn’t too reliable either.

Since we were rarely home the apartment’s shortcomings didn’t impact the trip too much, but as I’ve learned on my travels you can never be certain what you are going to get for your money. Sometimes I’ve been pleasantly surprised (like Vancouver), other times you’re not blown away (like New York). I’m certainly discovering a lot about how to locate short term rentals as I travel around the world this year.

I hope you have enjoyed the travel videos I post to this blog. Obviously they are not always strictly on topic, but they are certainly part of my entrepreneur’s journey. I’ve got more planned too. Next I have Montreal and Quebec City coming up (I just need to edit and produce them) and since I’m about to start the European leg of my trip the videos will keep coming.

The Apple Store: New York City Style

This might be confusing, but I’m actually in Quebec City posting this video from my trip to New York City a couple of weeks ago.

I’m slowly editing the video footage so once I get the New York travels done I’ll have a video for Montreal and Quebec - both wonderful cities.

Make sure you watch to the end of this video where you can see the New York Mac store and some pretty funky dancing by street performers.

New York Day 1 - Interview With Ed Dale, Kath and Kim and Times Square

These are the first two of the videos I’ve put together for my trip to New York City. It was an awesome week spent walking, eating, walking some more and then eating again. It gave my body a break from the computer, which was needed after a busy few months with Blog Mastermind.

Ed Dale Interview

This video is from when I first landed and went straight to the 30 Day Challenge meet-up, which coincidentally was organized for the same time I was in the city. Ed Dale, a friend and fellow Aussie from Melbourne is the leader of the challenge and I captured this interview with him outside the meet-up venue, which as you can see was quite noisy, apologies for that.

Ed and I had some laughs about the likelihood of the American version of Kath and Kim succeeding (car accident was Ed’s words), plus we learn about how Ed become a well known Internet marketer and why he continues to work despite having made millions online years ago from his website sales.

Times Square

In this second video I head out to the streets of New York and wander into Times Square, which is always spectacular at night.

I speculate in this video how well the billboards convert as marketing tools and wonder whether a billboard with Blog Mastermind plastered on it would do very well. Look out for the cookie from the Roxy deli as well.
