Lessons From Daryl and Andrew - Day 1

I’ve become such a conference junky lately. Before this year I had never been to one, now I’ve been to three in the space of two months. To be fair, this isn’t so much a conference, it’s a workshop, although there are 150+ people crammed into the room, so it’s no small workshop!

Andrew and Daryl Grant, the ebook business gurus, opened day one of their four day event focusing on, hmm…the simplest way to put it is, the “millionaire mindset”. I’m beginning to wonder if anyone has copywrited that term yet since I’m hearing it thrown around by a lot of people.

Essentially day one was all about establishing the mental framework necessary to move past any blockages you presently face that will stop your business, in fact your entire life, from becoming a success.

It makes a whole lot of sense to open an event like like focusing on the mind and your own perception of reality because the main reason for not meeting goals has nothing to do with externalities - it’s all about you. Once you get the “you” congruent with your desired outcomes then things tend to fall into place and the whole process is more enjoyable.

I’m off to the Daryl and Andrew eBook Conference & Recommended Links

Daryl and Andrew Grant, who you might remember from my podcast interview with Daryl where she explains how they make over $250,000 a year selling ebooks online, which is still one of my most downloaded podcasts, are hosting a seminar this week for their coaching clients.

While I don’t intend to do the ebook business model that Andrew and Daryl use at the moment, I’m heading to the event because I’m always keen to network with fellow Internet marketers and potentially make some new friends and of course learn heaps from Andrew, Daryl and the other presenters. I also have free tickets and the event is in my hometown of Brisbane, so I can’t say no!

As always whenever I get a chance I’ll attempt to blog about the event and what I’m learning, but I expect the Broncos league club (Brisbane Rugby League team) where the event is held won’t have net access, so I will upload my articles when I get home in the evenings.

Rich Schefren Coaching Program

Rich Schefren’s Strategic Profits coaching program has opened doors briefly and once again closed. Thanks to those who joined the program via my link. I heard from a few of you, but not everyone has said hello, so if you did join Rich’s program and you found out about it via this blog please contact me so I know who you are and we can do the networking thing.

Recommended Links

  • Do you know Mark Joyner? He was called the godfather of Internet marketing at the World Internet Summit and needless to say, the guy has been online for a long time, although he doesn’t do the Internet market guru career anymore, instead he’s attempting to change the world starting with his Simpleology.

If you are interested in some deep thinking intellectual discussion, or perhaps cartoons are easier for you to understand, you will like Mark’s blog, which incidentally is the first high profile person I have seen make use of a .name extension. You can find his blog at MarkJoyner.name.

  • I’ve intended to send out a link to AlleNation for a while, another young entrepreneur blogger dishing out the goods. Allen Heat talks a lot about blogging and making money from his blogs as he builds his network. I enjoy the tales from guys like Allen doing the hard work each day to get his business up and running, and I suspect you will too.
  • The team over at Young Go Getter recently launched a new blog design and I must say, I like it! If you have a chance, go check out this great blog for young entrepreneurs, who have been long time supporters of my blog.
  • Andy Beard is a well known search engine expert but I’ve come to admire his blogging style, which you can check out at AndyBeard.eu, more than anything else. He never does anything half way - every post he puts out there demonstrates his commitment to quality, which is something I admire in any blogger, or person for that matter.
  • nPost.com now have a section for jobs in start-up companies. Most of the positions are in US based organiZations, so if you come from that part of the world and fancy working for a tech company, check out the nPost jobs page.
  • Lastly, here’s a video for you featuring a discussion from some very successful web companies, many of which I suspect you know already. Featured are Sean Suhl of Suicide Girls, Akash Garg of hi5, Max Levchin of Slide, James Hong of HotorNot, Markus Frind of PlentyofFish and Drew Curtis of Fark. The panel was moderated by Guy Kawasaki.

Why Ongoing Education Is The Key Ingredient For Success In Business and Blogging

At the start of March I bought a bunch of new products, including Product Launch Formula from Jeff Walker ($997), the Dot Com Secrets Free CD from Russell Brunson ($7.95 for shipping) and paid half of the $997 fee to attend the World Internet Summit in Melbourne. On top of that I subscribe to Perry Marshall’s Renaissance club and Rich Schefren’s private business systems coaching program.

I think I spent at least half of the money I made from blogging in February in the first week of March, but I consider it money well spent.

Top Bloggers Are Thought Leaders

If you read many of the top blogs written by one specific individual you will notice that they know a lot about a certain topic. They usually have spent a significant amount of time working and experiencing the things they write about. Consequentially they can blog with the authority that only comes from experience.

On top of experience, many bloggers tap into the industry they write about, reading other blogs, following industry leaders and buying books, magazines and information products. They realize the necessity to stay up to date with current events so they don’t get left behind. The is especially important if you want to be a consultant or establish authority in your field.

Free Quotes For Business to Business Services via VendorSeek.com

In my business timeline, which is seriously due for an update to account for the last year or two, you may recall I talked about the early days with my start-up business BetterEdit. If you check out the Way Back Machine archives for BetterEdit.com you will see the different evolutions of the site, including a period where BetterEdit was more than just an academic proofreading business - I offered book/manuscript proofreading, business editing, language translation and transcribing services.

I was focused on cashflow back then and thought the best way to generate cash was offer as many services as I could. As each job came through I’d search my network of resources for an appropriate freelancer to do the work. Freelancers would provide me with quotes, I’d choose the best, slap on a margin to make a profit and quote that back to the client. It was a time consuming process but I made it work and closed most leads and made some of my first business profits using that model. At one point I had an ongoing business editing client feeding about $2000 worth of work to me each month, but it was always difficult to juggle finding the right people, making sure the jobs were done on time and realizing a profit from the process.

Needless to say things changed, and if you read through the archives of this blog, in particular this article - Pricing Points, Perceived Value And How To Make More Money Per Sale, you will see how my business strategy improved as I learnt more about business from guys like Rich Schefren, Jay Abraham, Perry Marshall and others. The changes flowed through to my business model as well, to the point where it is today - a much tighter focused business that generates a higher profit margin per job, provides a better quality service and I don’t have to run around looking for freelancers for each project like I used to.

Matching Vendors With Clients - VendorSeeK.com

VendorSeekI relate my story because just today I received a review request from VendorSeek and it brought back memories of my original business model. Here is my review.

VendorSeek is a business to business services clearing house. Whenever you need a professional service you can go to VendorSeek.com and submit a form for quotes. VendorSeek solicits it’s network of verified vendors, who reply with quotes to complete the project, you just choose which one, if any, to accept.

The VendorSeek website explains the benefits like this:
