I’m presently sitting at a cafe just down the road from the McGill university campus in Montreal. This is my second trip to Montreal and thankfully today the weather has turned out warm, warm enough to snow unlike yesterday, which was cold enough only for ice. It’s amazing when you come to look upon a snowy day as warm.
I just spent an hour or so walking around the McGill campus placing a few BetterEdit posters up. I don’t poster myself anymore for BetterEdit, but I still enjoy walking around a campus now and then and since I was coming to Montreal I thought why not. If I convert just one student into a lifetime customer today’s little poster journey could be worth as much as $1000 in business, so it might turn out financially worthwhile as well.
One thing I have come to realize as a result or running a business that focuses on the student market - it’s very hard to tap the student demographic with low margin products or services, unless you have some direct line of peer to peer communication. Advertising on campus is either not permitted or very cost prohibitive if you go through official channels like the student union.
I’m sure it works wonders for high margin products like travel, credit cards and insurance, but with an editing service where you don’t make a lot per order, it is difficult to justify spending thousands on marketing. Thank god for Google is all I can say at the moment in regards to BetterEdit’s lead generation strategies.
Tomorrow is my last day in Montreal before heading back on the road to Toronto via Kingston again, which is a lovely little town with a nice university, Queens. I didn’t have time to poster Queens on the way through, but perhaps on the way back I will. I’m not feeling to pressured since any postering I do now is a bonus.
Next week I’m heading to Florida to attend the first Rich Schefren strategic profits seminar for his coaching clients. I’ve never attended a seminar like this before and given it will just be Rich presenting for the whole weekend I suspect I will never attend another seminar like it.
The sun is shining in Montreal so I’m heading outside to do some wandering.
