You Can Make $20,000 A Month Online - 2007 Year In Review Part 3

This is the third and final installment of my year 2007 round-up report. You should read part one and two first, before reading this. Here are links to the previous articles -

Forming A Routine

I moved from my dad’s place into my own place in July and in August I began settling in, slowly buying furniture and household items. It’s amazing how many things you have to do when you first move into an empty house. Ikea certainly benefited from my money during this time as I stocked up on stuff.

My working life became quite routine and although initially I had trouble keeping up with all the new tasks, I eventually found a balance.

This is what I do most days when working at home

Each week I had to produce one lesson for the students and I would usually create one additional piece of multi-media, like a video case study, or an audio interview. In between this, I would man the helpdesk, write blog articles and prepare little mini-promotions, one of which I did with Darren Rowse of Problogger and another with Anita Campbell of SmallBizTrends and one with Jason Katzenback of Portalfeeder.

Rob Kingston took over the helpdesk and Fran Kerr started assisting with other Blog Mastermind tasks, like adding materials to the members area. This freed up some time and meant I could focus my energy on producing the best content for my blog and Blog Mastermind. It felt good to practice what I preach about working less by outsourcing, focusing your energies on your core skills and of course, increasing your income at the same time.

I’m not entirely sure what Andy is going to ask me about, but I expect it has a lot to do with how to become a professional blogger :-). Jim Kukral and Chris Garrett have already been featured in interviews for this series.

Two weeks after Andy does an interview with an expert, he also does a mastermind conference call with everyone who subscribed so you can focus on implementing what you learned.

How Much Are Your Blog Posts Worth?

Here’s an interesting situation.

You’re ambitious. You desire to grow a fantastic blog, in fact possibly the best blog on your topic in the entire blogosphere.

You realize that in order to be the best you need to have the most traffic, a huge RSS readership and serious exposure.

With big traffic comes the potential for big earnings. With thousands of daily readers you can earn thousands of dollars per month. You know a six figure blogging income is not only realistic, you expect to be in the top 1% of blog earners.

In order to realize your ambition you need content - the best content on your blogging topic - and lots of it.

To meet these goals you have to commit yourself to some serious work. Your blog won’t write itself. You are quite capable of producing fantastic content - content good enough to make you one of the best in your field, but there is a problem. You are lazy.

Okay, that’s not entirely fair. You are not lazy, it’s just that you are not prepared to commit to anything that asks you for many hours of work each and every day of your life. What you crave is flexibility and independence.

You want an income source that is reliable regardless of how much work you feel like doing today or tomorrow. You like the idea of taking a few days off or even a few months off now and then. Blogging is still something you want to take seriously, you might even do it every day for a while when your motivation is strong, you just don’t want a never-ending obligation.

You are aware enough to realize that motivation and interest change, hence you must plan for a future where you are not feeling motivated about blogging or when life circumstances take you away from your blog.

You want the rewards of being one of the best, if not THE best in your niche, but are you committed enough to do the work necessary to get there?

Is This The Only Sustainable Blogging Business Model?

It’s taken four articles to get here, but at last the final chapter in the series on sustainable business models that use blogs. If this is the first time you have read this series please read the articles in sequence. Here are links to the previous articles -

If you have stuck with me and read all the articles in this series you are probably eagerly awaiting my recommendation for professional blogging business models that ARE sustainable. I have compiled my suggestions below and I offer one main method for using blogs as the focus of a business, but the picture I paint is not an ideal business model in my opinion.

It is still very early days in the blogging world and there are not many people currently using a blog or several blogs as the main focus of their business model. Thousands of people use blogs to augment an existing business, but not many focus on blogs as the business and of course there are many successful professional bloggers, but that’s not a business as I have explained over the course of this series.

In order to become a professional blog business owner you must establish a small business model that uses blogs, but does not require you to always blog. In order for this to work for you, as I hinted in previous articles, you need to learn how to create something that is not dependent on your own input for success and adjust your preconceptions of how to build wealth.
