How To Market With Blog Comments The Right Way

What’s the most common and simplest marketing advice for attracting traffic to your blog?

Leave comments on other blogs.

Yep, it’s easy, it’s quick, and because of that, nearly everyone does it wrong. However because so many use blog comments to pretty much just leave spam, if you use blog comment marketing the right way, you really stand out from the crowd and can enjoy good results.

Watch the video and I explain how to more effectively use comments to market your blog.

If you enjoy this video, please tweet it, you can share it on Facebook or on your preferred social network. And of course, if you haven’t done so already, please join my email newsletter on this page (enter your name and email at that link to join).

  • [..YouTube..] Hey Yaro! I am wondering if I should generally post “video blogs” on my Youtube channel that are different from my actual blog, or is it good to post the videos on both places. I am thinking that ultimately, I want to develop a following on both venues – Youtube and my blog, so that makes me think I should just post the same in both places and work smart. However, I don’t know to what extent people will follow both. Thanks!

  • [..YouTube..] Hey YaroGreat to see you’re getting into video a lot more. Since your video is about commenting… I guess that means I have to leave a nice comment now otherwise you might delete it!Ok here goes…I think commenting on blog posts is cool. But that’s kinda over done now – “been there done that” kinda thing. On the other hand, leaving comments on people’s YouTube channels is a much easier way to stand out and to make the connection with the author… or video creator in this case /cont

Thanks!

  • [..YouTube..] Hey Yaro

Great to see you’re getting into video a lot more.

Since your video is about commenting… I guess that means I have to leave a nice comment now otherwise you might delete it!

    Ok here goes…

I think commenting on blog posts is cool. But that’s kinda over done now – “been there done that” kinda thing.

On the other hand, leaving comments on people’s YouTube channels is a much easier way to stand out and to make the connection with the author… or video creator in this case /cont

  • [..YouTube..] /cont…

And leaving a video response where you speak directly to the channel owner can be worth GOLD – cos then they get to actually SEE you too!

But of course, I am totally biased when it comes to video 😉

    Kinda unfairly biased actually hehehe!

Thanks for the great video once again!

  • Yaro, thanks for this..

Great video post – this is something I recommend all my readers and subscribers to do. I use it myself (as you can see) but you spoke about something in this video that I never thought of..

Impressing the author or the audience.. Even though I never thought about this aspect of blog commenting, I always comment to further interact with the author of the post.. which is (i guess) the right thing to do..

Thanks again for this great post
    talk soon

  • Rob

    Thanks Yaro,

Like Hector’s comment (above), the concept of interacting with the author of the post, rather than sharing an opinion to the blog’s audience is definitely an important distinction.

I’ve noticed it plenty of times, but never really thought about the two different targets a comment can be directed towards. Also, don’t know about you, but I’ve noticed that blogs which have multiple content publishers tend to get comments directed at an author’s post more often than blogs operated by single individuals (I won’t go into reasons why – it’d take hours lol, and I’m sure you could figure them out)

Also, it be great to do a comparison between various commenting approaches and styles for engaging users in social networking websites (I.e. Twitter, Facebook), in comparison to a blog post. I think there’d be something in that topic Yaro, as you have much less word space and longevity for a post to remain relevant, as it’s in a public domain with millions of users.

  • I left a comment on your YouTube channel – does that count?

    🙂

    Gideon Shalwick

  • Hi Yaro, That was a great video with really great information. Thank you so much for that and I really think you should make more videos like it…

    JUST KIDDING!

To be honest, I can understand why you want to interact with the author of the post but I think that if you will aim to interact with the audience you will actually achieve both.

What I mean is that if your comment is well written and engaging, than the audience will reply to it and maybe you will be able to start some sort of discussion. When the audience will reply and find your comments beneficial I am sure that the post author will not miss that so you can get both his attention by getting the attention of the audience.

    Hope this makes some sense.

  • Hi Yaro,

Thanks a lot for bringing up this issue and guidance us on the actual way to make comments on blogs.

I agree with your thoughts. I have seen this myself. If you leave a high quality comment, everyone will appreciate it. The author and the audience, and you do get more clicks to your website.

I have also become a regular reader of some blogs by seeing their comments on every blog post on other blogs. Their comments were of really high quality, and I just thought ‘hey I should check out this person’s blog’, and then I became a regular reader.

Thanks for reminding and I’ll keep your advice in my mind whenever I comment on blogs.

    Kindest,
    Nabeel

  • Your Message

The message of emotional engagement really resonates with me. I would like to add that the other ingredient is “authenticity”. I always stay longer on blogs where there are many comments from people with real opinions about the subject matter – often the comments are as insightful or more insightful than the original post. I even don’t mind if links are included as long as I feel certain that the commenter’s comments are authentically stated.

To me, it’s a bit like going into a shop when the shopkeeper asks “How are you?” but they really don’t want to know – they are engaging for a purely self-interested reason.

Of course, when commenting on blogs I realise that there is something in it for me, potentially – but I am always wanting to engage in the conversation because I think my online presence is “real” and not “virtual”.

On my own blog I am only ever motivated to reply to comments when there is something disclosed about the commenter or their views. In other words, a potential for a real conversation.

Anyway, emotional engagement is very much part of relationship skills and one of my passions so I am very happy to hear you advise that is part of the key to spreading interest in my own blog.

I would love to know some more about the whole “dofollow” thing on blogs please – can you direct me to a few good articles on this please? Many thanks.

  • [..YouTube..] How about looking at the intensity and passion of comments to help one determine niches for development. Nothing wrong with politeness; it may be that the person doesn’t know how to express that the subject matter is interesting to them and they would like *you* to do more on that subject. Better to have a polite comment than none at all. And you could build on that post and ask folks what other types of issues they would like explored.

  • [..YouTube..] Hello Yaro

again a great video, but to engage emotionally without becoming argumentative is not a easy task. Or this is what you recommend?

    Hey Yaro

I have to say the one thing (there were many) that I really took away from this video was the fact that I never really stop to read other comments that have been left on the blog prior to mine… Can’t explain why, I usually get in read the post, leave my thoughts in the comment and that’s it. Never really thought about comments being a way to actually converse on the blog further, how ridiculous is that…

I am guilty of being lazy at times and leaving a very generic comment, that doesn’t mean that I haven’t thought about what they have written or taken anything away from it, it is purely me syndicating during time constraints rather than putting real time aside to do it properly. I guess I figured a comment is a comment… not a very good way to think is it, and it certainly isn’t paying the the owner of the blog the respect they deserve considering they have probably just poured ALOT of time and effort into that post!

Also wanted to add in that I can really see that you are using Gideon’s techniques in your videos. I have only just been introduced to Gideon and his vlogging techniques but they are awesome, and can see what a difference it really makes in watching your videos!

Thanks for making me think and re-consider what I’m really doing when leaving comments and the impact it has!
    cheers
    Nat

  • You know you are right Yaro. Now that I think about it for the most part I leave a comment on blogs about the post and dont go back to it. My comments are usually short too.

You were my inspiration to start being one notch more active on my blog commenting.

I will create a new email address for blog commenting, ask to be notified of all followup comments, and try to get back to them if time allows.

    Thanks for the post.

  • Thanks for the insight Yaro, i think that what it comes down to is a variety of things, such as inspiring thought, genuine interaction, and of course, using a real name, however, I think that most definitely the most powerful thing is to inspire a responsive action from not only the blog owner, but from the commenters as well.

In any sense, the comments that you make should be as valuable as your own content, thought provoking, conversational, and so on.

Although, on the reverse, I would love to hear your thoughts on some great tactics to increase blog comments on your own blog. Of course, other than creating a post about blog commenting… haha

    Thanks again!

  • I have seen some great results from posting quality comments… I have written over 50 posts at my news page & I have a popular video collection on “YouTube”.

My next goal is to have a guest post on a top site…

    Thanks

    :]

  • Yaro –

I always appreciate the quality information you put forth. I spend more time deleting spam comments than I do approving quality ones. Nothing like receiving a comment with nothing but gibberish and a link. At least if you are going to spam me, make it at least readable. Your video did make me think, tho I do try and provide quality post related comments.

  • Yaro

you make some interesting points and, to me at least, a couple of new ones. But engaging with people at an emotional level isn’t an easy thing to do, especially when comments are always left in written form. It means we have to start using emotionally charged words, and that gets a lot of people way outside their comfort zone unless the blog itself has raised an issue which provoked strong feelings.

Although there is a lot of rubbish on the web (and I’m sure you get your fair share of spam comments) most of the words you see in comments are bland. We don’t talk about feelings and when we use words like love and hate we’re exaggerating, not being emotional, and that’s OK because I don’t think many subjects connected with blogging or e-commerce generally are going to elicit a genuine emotional response (your post about outsourcing is clearly an exception).

What we can do is try to add something of value to the post, perhaps from our own experience as bloggers or from experience leaving comments. I was intrigued by Nat who said she never read the comments prior to her own. I’ve learned a lot from reading comments (as well as from the blog posts themselves) and the comments I like most are those that re-frame the blog post in other terms, especially if those terms are more specific to the arena I work in and help me apply the bloggers advice, or which add additional facts.

Whether these impress blog owners is something I don’t know, but I do know that as a blog reader, they help me.

  • It seems that you made your point, because all of the messages so far (well, almost) are of high quality and a lot more than “great post, thank you for sharing this.” 🙂

I never delete comments that say “great post etc.. ” even though they don’t add value to the conversation. I keep them, because they make me feel good about myself (but I understand that they might be spam).

  • You make a great point. I notice that a lot of people don’t even read the articles, then their comment makes no sense. I do find it hard to write lengthy comments due to the fact i am still new in the arena. The other thing I notice is some blog authors make a point to read the comments and respond. This shows a level of dedication and makes going to the blog somewhat of a more personal experience.

  • When promoting through blog comments, is it better to comment on a popular blog that gets a lot of comments, or a less popular with fewer comments? A blog that averages 100 comments per post is obviously a popular blog with many engaged readers, but I suspect few people read all 100 comments, and so your comment would very likely get lost. On the other hand, a blog that averages only 6 comments per post almost certainly has fewer readers, but it is likely that a higher percentage of readers will read all the comments, including yours.

    • I depends on your strategy and also where your comment appears. If you get the first comment it’s like Google search results – it gets the most attention.
I recommend focusing on up and coming bloggers rather than the most popular blogs. Also check to see whether the blogger has guest articles and links out to other blogs, since this is something you hope they will do for you, so you may as well focus on the blogs that appear open to this idea.

      • It is a good idea to look out for up and coming bloggers but I have a question. If you do post on a newer blog if it doesn’t have page rank should you even bother with it. There are a few i go to but mainly because they are interesting but I have been told to stay away from PR0’s, is that true?

      • That’s a good idea focusing on up and coming blogs. I started commenting on some of the top blogs, but I soon felt like my comments were drowned out by the many other responses.

I’ve since started focusing on smaller blogs with good followings. I also went a step further and tried to engage directly with a few of the blog authors, and have successfully started up a small networking group to help each other succeed.

      • Hey Yaro and Paul L.,

I think I have something interesting to say in this conversation.

The purpose of commenting on blogs is to have a conversation right? Why not do that? Have a conversation like I am doing right now!

If you want to be present in the comments wherever you want Paul, just reply to the comments, the first one if you wish:)

It places you on the front line, it gives a second intelligent answer to the guy who luckily made the first comment, and the blog owner has what his blog is really designed for, a real genuine conversation on his subject!

  • I seem to learn something every time I check out one of your videos. I wasn;t aware that I was not connecting with the blog author until I went over some of the comments I had left and realised they could be seen as spammy comments.

You have also unspired me to do something that I have been putting off doing for ages. I’m going to put my ugly mug in front of the camera and start doing my own videos in the hope of producing something helpful and driving traffic from video sites like Youtube.

It is a thought that terrifies me. :/

  • It’s funny how everyone’s trying to impress with their comments now lol. Nice video 🙂

    • lol they are 🙂

The worst comments I ever got was for a triple X website chat site. It got through akimet and the jerk ended up commenting on 6 or 7 posts. I did not find out till about 3 days later when I went to update my site. Needless to say I was infuriated. I contacted him via his website and threatened to do everything in my power to make his life miserable if he ever did that again.

other than that “great post” (typical spam message) If spammers were only more creative.

  • Yaro, thank you so much for your advice, I am just getting started in the blogging scene and will gladly listen to all ! Your advice on putting your heart into the comments left on other blogs is exactly what I have been starting, so it really resonates with me. I have plans to start a blog to get practice writting, which since starting school last January I have come to enjoy. My dream is to teach others the many concepts of internet marketing and other issues related to this computer age. It really is fascinating what you are sharing and one of the biggest parts that I enjoy is how it is free for the asking.

There are so many of us who are skeptical of every income producer that has something to sell, when one is found that will freely give their experience to all who will listen it’s a breath of fresh air. There is so much on this site, it is tough to take it in small bites. I hope to become involved in your Mastermind revolution very soon, I have to get more practice writing on other blogs first. Thank you for sharing so much !!

  • great message – we need to remember that we have more than just one audience. when we write for our websites and blogs, we need to please both the search engine spiders and the human eyes. similarly, when blogging, we have two audiences, the commenters and the author. the same can be said for other activities such as article marketing, wherein we need a solid deep linking strategy to build PR, as well as good content to please the human reader. keeping in mind all our constituencies makes a tremendous difference in our marketing results.

  • Very nice explanation, Yaro. People don’t understand that there’s a real person behind the blog that put his time and effort into the post and would like to see some genuine feedback and not just random comments.

  • Fantastic piece of marketing technique you explained here in your article and am also a newbie trying and learning seo lessons from techies, as every one knows commenting is good if done with healthy way, i think it will help blog writers as well.

  • Yaro, certainly applying emotion and really being into the topic is the right approach to leave a blog comment. Yaro one other thing you mentioned in your video, that I really enjoyed hearing is that you are moderating and deleting useless comments that are obviously spam, commentators like myself who take the time to leave a more valuable comment feel your pain when we see those types of comments.

    Till then,

    Jean

  • Here’s how to dramatically improve the impact of your comments.

It’s based on the guidelines that video marketers use to improve viewer engagement.

With video you have about 8 seconds to hook your viewer or they’ll click elsewhere, but with blog comments you have even less time as most visitors either don’t read comments or quickly scan through them at best.

    So it’s essential to make the first few words of your comment stand out and use them to hook the interest of the blog visitors. These hooks can take the form of;

    a. Curiosity

Where you create intrigue designed to pique the interest of readers, then proceed to explain the mystery. Anything that’s counter-intuitive works well in this situation.

    b. Amazement

Where you provide a story or an insight that’s so amazing that it compels people to continue reading your comment.

    c. Perspective

Where you provide readers with the benefit of a unique experience that they otherwise wouldn’t have access to.

    d. Promise

Where you make a bold promise to reveal something that will improve the lives of the people who read the comment.

These types of comment require a significant degree of insight and creativity, but certainly help to improve the value of the blog and raise the profile of the person who left the comment.

  • Ok…great video and some great comments. I have a learned a lot from you Yaro – your courses, posts and books and I appreciate your advice. But this one for me has raised some controversy when it comes to dealing with other bloggers or spammers who leave comments on my site.

First of all, I finally decided to disable my comments due to excessive spam – even with several spam filters in place (the ones you and others have recommended). It was just getting to be too much with one of my blogs and it was taking more time than I wanted to spend having to sort and go through them all. I have decided to use twitter as a way to have people comment on my blog and to dialogue back and forth. It`s more effective and efficient for me. Also, it hasn`t hurt my traffic.

Second of all, I have mentored and have taken courses with other bloggers and I have found that some of the most popular and my favorite blogs have got rid of their comments as well… Just to name a few Seth Godin, Leo from Zen habits, Steve Palvina…

So from my perspective and due to the fact that i want to enjoy life more rather than reading unthoughtful comments – just like you have mentioned, I choose not to have comments. Nevertheless I still will leave comments and take this advice that you have given. It`s a great way to build relationships whether they are follow or no-follow. Thank you.

  • Great content as always Yaro.

I started blog commenting when I first started creating websites, but immediately got into trouble for leaving the kind of comments you mentioned in the video. You know what I mean…

‘Great post, well done…’ etc etc.

The comments were getting deleted left, right and centre. Bad times!

I had to learn the lesson you teach in this video the hard way. So glad I did though, as it now provides a little trickle of traffic from some great blogs (and so the traffic is targeted and relevant).

I would love to interview you on my blog within the next year to share some of your journey.

    Matt

  • [..YouTube..] After seeing this video and reading the comments, especially from Gideon I have to agree with Gideon. In my own blogs I find that leaving a comment that you suggest really doesn’t do a whole lot for me, but if I leave a comment on their video page or on their Facebook page or something like that then I get a lot more traffic.I believe that the future is in the social media frontier then on blogs. More and more people are gravitating to Facebook and Twitter.

  • You make a great point. I notice that a lot of people don’t even read the articles, then their comment makes no sense. I notice is some blog authors make a point to read the comments and respond.

  • Yaro,
I’ve recently decided to stop blogging daily on topics which are my interpretation on all the various topics that are useful to blogging. What I’m doing is trying to put a plan together to give me a direction with an end goal. It’s started off with a new domain, which I believe can be branded really easily.

That said, one thing I’ve noticed is that the hardest thing about blogging is getting readers to comment. I’ve followed advice like what you’ve covered in your video, and have gotten some traffic because of it.

However, your video prompted me to check out my own blog to see what posts are most popular – i.e. most comments. You mentioned the importance of emotional engagement. I found that my more popular posts are either those on a topic which is always going to get good traffic, or those posts which feature a little more emotional writing on my part.

From this I think you could say you can implement the same method of emotional engagement in writing posts as well as comments. I guess what I take from this is the important thing is trying to strike common ground with the author/reader, as that will more likely start to form a relationship which can be built upon.

  • [..YouTube..] Hey Yaro,We can blame Gideon for too many videos – it’s his rapid video method :)Yes – if the blogger you’re trying to get attention from actually reads the comments and not getting someone to filter them for them. (I know people like John Reese have it outsourced)I could add to this about “imagine writing 500 words”. Instead do a video response, then have it transcribed and post both onto their blog and YouTube channel giving double impact. (most people are too lazy to do this)
